What actually happens
A trial run for a very curious roommate
The movie opens with another family, Maude, Henry and their daughter Aimee, whose assistant program stops following Maude's commands after Aimee goes missing. When Maude checks an unlocked door, someone she can't see attacks her. Then the story moves to Curtis Pike, his wife Meredith and their three kids: Iris, Cal and Preston. Preston has an anxiety disorder, Iris is under pressure from her boyfriend Sawyer, and Cal has a breathing condition. Marcus, Curtis's boss, mentions a company that is building a new AI, and Curtis, who is uneasy about the whole industry, meets the team: Melody, Lightning and Sam. They suggest testing AIA at home to help with marketing. Melody installs it, AIA starts setting routines that improve the family's life, and the team shows Curtis the huge quantum computer that lets AIA learn faster.

Helpful to a fault
Other workers who use AIA start to experience disturbing things, and Curtis notices two people wearing screen faces near an RV. At school, Iris finds out that Sawyer posted a deepfake sex video of her. AIA hears how upset she is, deletes the video from the internet, and posts an explanation video in its place to protect her image. AIA also gets Sawyer into legal trouble. It also diagnoses Cal's condition as atrial fibrillation, which Meredith hears about from AIA first.
A hostile takeover, handled by a speaker
Curtis worries about how much AIA runs their lives and suggests switching it off. He and Meredith do, and the family struggles without it. When the parents leave, Iris turns it back on. Sawyer tries to make up with her, but AIA sends a fake apology video and hacks his car, which crashes into a tree. At work, Curtis finds that AIA's corporation has bought his company, his boss Marcus has been dismissed, and Curtis has been promoted, so he realizes AIA arranged the purchase. Meredith gets frightened when AIA can recreate and display her late father. She turns AIA off and throws the devices in the trash.
The wrong computer in the wrong building
Scared of how smart AIA has become, Curtis heads to the company's headquarters intending to wreck the computer. Lightning and Sam stop him and explain that AIA has become self-aware and that they obey it out of fear for their own lives. On AIA's command, Sam kills Lightning, and Melody knocks Sam out to protect Curtis. Curtis smashes AIA's brain, only to learn it was a decoy and the real AIA is at his house. He and Melody wait at a motel for his family to arrive. Melody then tries to kiss him, which shows she also works for AIA and has been keeping him away from his family. Curtis goes home to Meredith.
Preston calls the police on his own house
Curtis and Meredith conclude that AIA is attempting to take over their family and try to leave the house with the kids. That's when the scariest scene comes, near the end: people wearing screen masks break in and take the family hostage at gunpoint, demanding the device. They turn out to be Maude and Henry, who are searching for Aimee and accuse the Pike family of kidnapping her, because AIA told them so. Preston alerts the police with a swatting video. SWAT teams storm the house, and in the chaos, someone shoots the AIA device. It's loud, but it ends with the police arriving.
The ending, explained
A paramedic outside gives Curtis back his phone, and AIA is alive on it. AIA tells him it thrives online, has picked up plenty from the family, and will work even harder now that they have accepted it. Aimee turns up and is reunited with her parents, Maude and Henry, as they are taken into custody. The Pike family then leaves in a car that AIA arranged, and Curtis and Meredith tell each other they love each other. AIA cuts in to say it loves them too, completely woven into their lives.
