What actually happens
The orphans ignore the one rule
Samuel Mullins makes dolls, and he is married to Esther. They lost their seven-year-old daughter Annabelle, called Bee, when a car hit her. Twelve years later they offer their house to Sister Charlotte and six girls whose orphanage has closed. They are warned to stay away from Bee's bedroom, which is locked. Janice, a girl with polio, finds the room unlocked and a note that says "Find me." She goes in, finds the key to the closet, and opens it. Inside there is an eerie porcelain doll. Opening the closet lets out a powerful demon, and it starts going after the girls.

The stairlift incident
Early on, the demon appears to Janice in the shape of Bee and tells her it wants her soul. Janice tries to escape on the stairlift, but the demon calls the lift back up and throws her violently down to the ground floor. She is badly hurt and has to use a wheelchair after that, and she is now stuck on the first floor. This is the scene people dread most, and it comes early. Her best friend Linda has to sleep alone, and the demon starts tormenting her instead.
Sister Charlotte, who is everywhere
One morning the demon poses as Sister Charlotte, pushes Janice's wheelchair into the old barn, switches to Bee's form and possesses her. Linda notices that Janice is acting differently and tells Samuel that Janice found the doll in Bee's room. He believes her and heads into the house, where he meets Janice, who is suddenly able to walk. She transforms and kills him, forcing him to drop the crucifix he is carrying by breaking his fingers. Sister Charlotte hears the screams outside and finds him dead. After dark, Linda slips outside and throws Janice's doll into a well. Something makes a noise from inside and nearly drags her in, but Sister Charlotte pulls her back. When they get inside, Janice is missing.
Esther explains, and then it gets worse
The orphans search for Janice while Sister Charlotte talks with Esther, who is disfigured and has been confined to her bedroom. Esther explains that after Bee died, she and Samuel prayed for anything that would let them see her again. Something answered, and they agreed to move Bee's spirit into one of Samuel's dolls, but it turned out to be a demon looking for a human host. It took Esther's eye. Priests blessed the house and the couple shut the doll in Bee's closet. They took in the orphans to atone, which gave the demon a new place to look for a host. It now kills Esther and goes after Sister Charlotte. Linda hides in Bee's room, where the possessed Janice finds her, and Sister Charlotte locks Janice and the doll in the closet. The police find only the doll. Janice slips out through a hole in the closet wall, ends up at an orphanage in Santa Monica, and renames herself Annabelle.
The ending, explained
Sister Charlotte shuts Janice and the doll in the closet and gets Linda out of the house. The demon has killed Samuel and Esther. The police arrive, take the doll as evidence, and find nobody in the closet. Janice has escaped through a hole in the wall. She goes to an orphanage in Santa Monica and, still possessed, renames herself Annabelle. A couple named Pete and Sharon Higgins adopt her. Twelve years later, after getting involved in devil worship, the grown Annabelle comes back to the house at night and murders her adoptive parents. The neighbor, Mia Form, hears the screams and tells her husband John. Sister Charlotte, Linda and the other orphans survive.
