What actually happens
Five names, one bathroom mirror
Helen Lyle studies anthropology at the University of Illinois Chicago and is collecting urban legends. The one she finds is Candyman, a spirit who kills anyone who says his name five times before a mirror. Locals have blamed him for a recent murder and others at the Cabrini-Green public housing project. Helen and her friend Bernadette Walsh say the name to Helen's bathroom mirror and nothing happens. They write a thesis on how the residents use the legend to cope with racial inequality, and visit the scene of the latest murder, where Helen finds a room full of sweets left out for Candyman. They talk to a neighbor named Anne-Marie McCoy, who is raising her infant son Anthony. At dinner, Professor Purcell explains the legend: Candyman was a painter, the son of a slave, whose love for a white woman led her father to send a lynch mob after him. They cut off his right hand, covered him in honeycomb, and left the bees to sting him to death.
A boy named Jake tells Helen about a horrible incident in a public bathroom. Helen goes to the place, and a man who says he is Candyman attacks her with a hook. She tells the police who he is, and he turns out to be a local gang leader, who gets charged with the murders. A few days later the real Candyman appears to her in a parking garage and hypnotizes her. He tells her that she has discredited his legend, so he needs innocent blood to keep it alive. Helen blacks out and wakes in Anne-Marie's apartment, covered in blood. Anne-Marie's pet Rottweiler, Annie, is dead and decapitated, and Anthony is missing. This is the scene people dread most, and it happens in the middle. Anne-Marie attacks Helen, Helen stabs her in the struggle, and the police arrive and arrest her.
Photographs are a bad hiding place for ghosts
Trevor bails Helen out, and she spots Candyman in one of her photographs from Cabrini-Green. That night Candyman breaks into her apartment and cuts her neck, and she passes out. When she wakes up, Bernadette has been murdered, and Helen is framed for it. She is committed to a psychiatric hospital. A month later, while a psychiatrist is interviewing her for her trial, she tries to prove her innocence by summoning Candyman. He shows up and kills the psychiatrist, then undoes her restraints and lets her go.
A kiss with a lot of bees in it
Helen goes home and finds her husband Trevor has moved in a student named Stacey. After confronting him, she runs to Cabrini-Green to find Anthony. Candyman is waiting in his lair and tells her that if she surrenders to him, Anthony will be safe. He offers her immortality, opens his coat to show a ribcage full of bees, and kisses her while the bees pour from his mouth down her throat. Then he disappears with Anthony. Helen wakes up in front of a mural of Candyman and his lover, who looks a lot like her, which hints that Helen may be the woman's reincarnation.
The ending, explained
Candyman offers to free Anthony if Helen helps him scare the residents of Cabrini-Green, then goes back on it and tries to burn her and Anthony on a pyre. Helen stabs him with a burning plank. The fire destroys Candyman, and Helen dies getting Anthony out. Anne-Marie and Jake lead the Cabrini-Green residents at Helen's funeral. Trevor, grieving and guilty, says Helen's name five times in the mirror at home. Her vengeful spirit appears and kills him with Candyman's hook, and Stacey later discovers him in the bathtub. Back in Candyman's lair, a fresh mural shows Helen in white with her hair burning.
