Is Castle Rock Scary? The Verdict and the Whole Plot
Yes, 5.5 out of 10. It's a slow mystery that keeps cutting back to an unaccounted-for man in an underground cage.
Ruling: It is a long, slow mystery, so watch it on a weekend with the lights on.
Castle Rock runs two seasons and twenty episodes, all set in the same small Maine town. The first one begins at Shawshank State Penitentiary, where a guard counting beds finds an inmate nobody had on the list.
The premise, briefly
In Castle Rock, Maine, a prison guard finds a man nobody has on file locked in an underground cage, and the first name the man whispers is Henry's.
The verdict above is spoiler-free. Everything below, including the ending, stays hidden until you pick a depth.
Season 1 ends with the Kid locked up in the abandoned Shawshank, after he turns out to be a version of Henry from another reality. Season 2 ends with Annie drowning Joy after wrongly deciding a cultist has possessed her, then imagining Joy alive.
The last scene of the season 2 finale. Annie decides a cultist has possessed Joy and drowns her, then tries to revive her. Joy's recovery turns out to be Annie's hallucination, and the series ends on it.
A dog dies in Castle Rock: in season 1 a German Shepherd is hit by a car, and its decomposed body keeps showing up in a suitcase.
Castle Rock is a slow mystery with occasional bursts of violence, and the second season follows a new main character, Annie Wilkes.
How it ends, the scene you're dreading, what happens to the dog, and the bottom line. About twenty seconds to read.
What actually happens
The inmate who isn't on any list
In 1991, Sheriff Alan Pangborn finds a boy named Henry Deaver, who had been missing, standing on the frozen lake in Castle Rock, Maine. Twenty-seven years later, Warden Dale Lacy of Shawshank State Penitentiary kills himself, and his successor Theresa Porter wants to reopen a closed cell block. A guard named Dennis Zalewski, counting beds there, finds an inmate nobody has on record, kept in an underground cage. Once he is let out, the man, called the Kid, whispers Henry's full name. Zalewski secretly phones Henry, now a death-row lawyer, who comes home and reconnects with Pangborn and with Ruth, who has dementia. Porter stonewalls him. Zalewski sees on the monitors that the Kid has killed several guards, then learns it happened only in his head. Lacy left a letter saying he thought the Devil had taken a boy's shape and that God told him to lock it away. After Henry agrees to a settlement for the Kid, Zalewski shoots a number of officers inside the prison and is killed in front of Henry.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A casket that drips and a dog that spooks
Wildfires burn near Castle Rock, and Shawshank, wanting less scandal, releases the Kid, who is told he has amnesia. Henry puts him up in a room above Molly's office. Henry's father's casket, being moved to a new plot, is dripping blood decades after the man died. At a ceremony honoring Pangborn, a dog startles Ruth and she jumps off a bridge into the water. Henry hears a ringing in his ear, as he did as a child, and Molly admits to him that she killed his father. In the woods, two campers named Odin and Willie tell Henry the ringing is a schisma that his father took for the voice of God, then lock him in an anechoic chamber in their camper. The Kid escapes a psychiatric hospital by setting a fire. In Ruth's memories, she hides in a shed with a revolver to ambush the Kid and accidentally shoots Pangborn instead.
Murder-themed bed and breakfast, ax included
Gordon and Lilith have bought Lacy's old house and turned it into a murder-themed bed and breakfast. Gordon, who has not forgiven Lilith for an affair, kills their first guests. Molly frees Henry from the camper. The Kid tells Henry about Ruth shooting Pangborn, and Henry's son Wendell calls the state police, who suspect the Kid of the killing. Henry finds Lacy's drawings of the Kid, who never changes, in the house, and Gordon and Lilith try to kill him. Lilith stabs herself by accident, and Jackie Torrance arrives and buries an ax in Gordon. The Kid then starts talking and tells Molly he is Henry Deaver, the son of Ruth and the pastor in another reality. Molly dies by accident in the woods near Castle Lake, and adult Henry follows the boy into that reality, becoming the Kid. Back in the present, Henry remembers pushing the pastor off a cliff in 1991 to protect Ruth, and overpowers the Kid. A year later, the Kid is locked up in the abandoned prison, and a mid-credits scene shows Jackie telling Dean Merrill about her book.
A lodge in Maine with a very bad guest list
Season 2 follows Annie Wilkes and her teenage daughter Joy, who are stranded in Castle Rock after a car accident and rent a room at the Stargazer Lodge from Ace Merrill. Ace feuds with his uncle Pop and with Abdi Howlwadaag, whose new mall development is taking his tenants. Annie, who hallucinates without her medication, breaks into Nadia's house for a passkey to the hospital's drug room. Ace firebombs the place, later threatens Joy, and Annie kills him. She falls into a chasm while disposing of the body, wakes among coffins, and soon sees Ace walking around alive. Joy decides her mother is having a psychotic break and ties her to a bed. Annie escapes and cuts Joy by accident. Joy finds a gun and license plates in Annie's locked box, along with a CD-ROM holding a novel, and a flashback shows Annie's violent childhood. Annie pushes her father down the stairs, stabs a woman named Rita, and flees with Rita's baby. Joy is that baby, and Rita tracks her down to Castle Rock. Meanwhile Ace converts townspeople into a cult at Marsten House.
The Emporium holds out against four hundred years of patience
In a flashback, French settlers in New Jerusalem are starving until one of them, Amity, meets a hooded angel who brings food and a new religion. Those who refuse are killed, and the angel eventually orders everyone to die in a ritual and wait four hundred years to be resurrected. Pere Augustin comes back first, in Ace's body. At the town parade the cultists unveil a wooden statue of the angel, which hypnotizes nearly everyone who sees it. Pop does not look at it and flees. Pop, Nadia, Chance, Abdi and Annie arm themselves at Pop's Emporium, and Pop burns Lacy's letters. He stays behind to buy time and is shot by Augustin, but he injected himself with Haldol first. As a cultist called Etienne he helps Nadia and Abdi set explosives in the tunnels. The blasts break the hypnosis, Pop dies again, Annie finds Joy, and the angel disappears from Castle Lake. The scene people dread is the last one of the finale. A week after the explosion, Annie decides a cultist has possessed Joy and drowns her, then tries to revive her and imagines that it worked.
The ending, explained
One week after the explosion, Annie and Joy leave Castle Rock. Joy stays distant, and Annie decides a cultist has possessed her and drowns her, then learns she was wrong. She frantically tries to revive Joy and appears to succeed, and the two reconcile. It is a hallucination. The final scene shows Annie and a Joy who is not there waiting to meet their favorite author, Paul Sheldon, at a book signing. Earlier in the finale, Pop dies for the second time in the blast that frees the town, and the cult's angel vanishes from Castle Lake. Back in season 1, the Kid ends up imprisoned in the abandoned Shawshank.
The post-credits ruling
There is one. In the middle of the season 1 finale's credits, Jackie tells Dean Merrill she is writing a book and plans to head west to dig into her family's history.
