What actually happens
An app with a strict terms of service
At a party, teenager Courtney lets her friends talk her into installing Countdown, an app that claims to predict how long its user has left to live. Hers says three hours. She refuses to ride home with her drunk boyfriend Evan, and the app sends a notice that she has broken its user agreement. At home, an unseen entity attacks her and she dies as her timer hits zero. Elsewhere, Evan crashes and a tree branch spears the passenger seat Courtney avoided. Quinn Harris, a nurse at the hospital where Evan is admitted, brushes off his talk of a supernatural app and then downloads it. The app gives her two days. Evan skips his surgery and is told he has violated the user agreement. A ghostly Courtney meets him in a stairwell, and the entity kills him.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
The user agreement has a policy on skipping the family trip
Quinn finds Evan's phone in the morgue, and the app says he has no time left. She thinks she is a day from dying, so she cancels a family trip to visit her mother's grave, and the app tells her she has broken the user agreement. Her boss, Dr. Sullivan, sexually harasses her at work and blocks her attempt to report him. Searching online, she reads about other deaths linked to the app, which most people dismiss as fakes. She tries to buy a new phone, but Countdown installs itself on that one too. A demonic figure attacks her in the store's parking lot, and she meets Matt, whose app says he has eighteen hours. They work out that the user agreement breaks whenever someone tries to change their fate, like her cancelled trip and the train ride Matt skipped. At work, Sullivan has told the staff that Quinn harassed him, and she is suspended. Father John tells Quinn and Matt that the app is tied to a demon named Ozhin.
A hack that adds decades and a demon that takes them back
Derek, the phone salesman, hacks the app's code and finds that Jordan, Quinn's younger sister, was due to die shortly before Quinn. He adds decades to the timers of Quinn, Jordan and Matt. It does not hold. While Quinn and Matt spend the night together, the entity takes Matt's form and attacks her, and the timers, Jordan's included, go back to the original lifespans. Jordan gets the notification at home and is then terrorized by a demonic version of her and Quinn's late mother. Quinn and Matt reach her in time. Back with Father John, they learn his theory: the curse might break if a user dies ahead of their timer or outlasts it. They draw a warding circle to slow Ozhin down.
The circle holds for exactly as long as it is useful
Near the end, the demon arrives and the circle keeps it off at first. Then it lures the group outside, kills Matt and wounds Jordan. This is the scene to brace for: it is the death of the character who has been helping Quinn, and it happens outside, away from the circle. Jordan, still grieving for Matt, starts having sharp stomach pain, and Quinn rushes her to the hospital. Once there, Quinn works out that she can kill Sullivan before his scheduled time and break the curse. She goes after him, but Ozhin saves him and turns to kill Jordan.
The ending, explained
Ozhin goes after Jordan, so Quinn overdoses on drugs before her own timer runs out and proves the app wrong. Jordan follows Quinn's instructions, gives her Naloxone and revives her, and both sisters' countdowns stop. Later, at their mother's grave, Quinn learns that Sullivan has been arrested after other nurses came forward. Then a sequel called Countdown 2.0 installs itself on her phone, and both sisters are horrified. Matt does not survive, but Quinn and Jordan do. A scene in the middle of the credits shows Derek on a date with the app turning off the lights and Ozhin attacking him.
The post-credits ruling
There is a mid-credits scene. Derek, the phone salesman, is on a date when the app turns off the lights and Ozhin attacks him.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: fine, no dog dies.
