What actually happens
A hand with webbed fingers and no return address
A geology expedition in the Amazon finds a fossil from the Devonian period: a skeletal hand with webbed fingers that links land animals to sea animals. The expedition leader, Dr. Carl Maia, tells his two assistants, Luis and Tomas, to wait at camp while he goes to a marine biology institute. There he meets David Reed, a former student and an ichthyologist who works at an aquarium in California. David persuades his boss, the money-minded Dr. Mark Williams, to pay for a second trip to find the rest of the skeleton. While Carl is away, a living member of the same species becomes curious about the camp. Luis and Tomas panic when it appears and attack it, and the enraged Creature kills them both.

The Black Lagoon, a paradise nobody comes back from
The group boards a steamer called the Rita, run by a gruff captain named Lucas. David, Carl, Mark, Dr. Edwin Thompson and David's girlfriend Kay Lawrence all come along. At the camp they find that Carl's assistants are dead. Lucas guesses a jaguar did it, and the others aren't sure. Further digging at the fossil site finds nothing, and Mark wants to quit. David guesses that part of the embankment holding the remaining bones collapsed into the river thousands of years ago and got carried away, and Carl says that tributary drains into a lagoon. Lucas names it the Black Lagoon and calls it a paradise, adding that nobody who goes in has come out. The scientists decide to go anyway, and they don't know the Creature is watching them.
Kay goes for a swim
The Creature has noticed Kay and follows the Rita all the way down to the Black Lagoon. Once the ship arrives, David and Mark dive for rock samples. After they come back up, Kay goes swimming, and the Creature stalks her from underneath. This is the scene people dread, and it comes right after the ship reaches the lagoon: the Creature swims beneath Kay, gets tangled in one of the ship's drag lines, and escapes, leaving a claw in the net. After that, more encounters with the Creature cost members of Lucas's crew their lives. It goes after Kay and tries to carry her off, but it gets captured and put in a cage on the Rita. In the night it escapes and goes for Edwin, who was on guard. Edwin hits it with a lantern and drives it off, and he is badly injured. David decides they should go back to civilization, and Mark, who can think of nothing but catching or killing the Creature, argues against it.
Logs across the exit
When the Rita tries to leave, the Creature has jammed the lagoon entrance with fallen logs, so the ship is stuck. The others work on the logs. Mark, who has been itching to capture the Creature, goes into the water to do it by himself and is mauled to death. Then the Creature hauls itself onto the Rita and sneaks up behind Kay. She screams as it grabs her and takes her away to its cavern lair.
The ending, explained
David, Lucas and Carl follow the Creature into its cavern and rescue Kay. They shoot the Creature in the chest. It wanders around outside for a while, then wades into the lagoon and tries to swim away, but it dies of its wounds and sinks into the dark water while the group watches. Kay is alive. Luis, Tomas, members of Lucas's crew and Mark did not survive, and Edwin was badly hurt earlier.
