What actually happens
A bubble bath and a wolf mask named Peachfuzz
Aaron Franklin, a videographer short on cash, takes an online job at a remote cabin in Crestline, California. His client, Josef, says he has an inoperable brain tumor and expects to die before his pregnant wife, Angela, has the baby. He wants Aaron to record a day-long video diary for their unborn child, whom he calls Buddy. The diary starts with Josef undressing for a long bubble bath, where he talks to his child as if it were in the tub with him, and he gets sad about dying. Uneasy, Aaron steps out of the room for a moment and finds a Halloween wolf mask sitting in a closet, and it scares him. Josef says the mask is named Peachfuzz, his father gave it to him as a child, and he plans to leave it to Buddy. Aaron thinks it looks too scary for a child.
Josef keeps behaving strangely, including jumping out at Aaron from a hiding place with a shriek and laughing when Aaron yells. His stories about his life start to look made up. At a restaurant, he asks Aaron whether he has ever done anything he is ashamed of. Josef then admits he stalked and photographed Aaron before they met, but says he regrets it and hopes Aaron will forgive him. Back at the cabin, Josef says he lied about the mask: he picked it up at a discount shop for ninety-nine cents and wore it when he assaulted Angela. Aaron grinds up Benadryl so Josef will sleep, but cannot find his car keys. He answers a phone call from Angela, who says she is Josef's sister and tells him to run. Josef breaks down crying about his fear of dying, then runs when Aaron mentions the call. Aaron finds him in the Peachfuzz mask, blocking the front door and growling, and the two scuffle before Aaron gets away.
Mail from a man who does not have the address
Aaron starts having nightmares about Josef, and packages arrive at his home even though he never gave Josef his address. They contain a videotape of Josef digging in the woods, a stuffed wolf, a knife and a heart-shaped locket with photos of the two men. The police cannot do anything, because Aaron knows too little about Josef. Josef appears outside Aaron's house at night and then comes inside while Aaron sleeps and snips some of his hair. A final DVD invites Aaron to meet him in daylight at Lake Gregory and make amends. Aaron agrees, wears a camera and sets his phone to dial 911. The scene people dread comes near the end. Aaron waits on a park bench, and Josef comes up behind him in the Peachfuzz mask and kills him with an axe.
The ending, explained
Josef watches the footage of Aaron's murder and wonders aloud why Aaron never turned around. He decides Aaron trusted him, believed he was a good man who would not hurt him, and declares Aaron his favorite victim. Later, Josef, who now calls himself Bill, gets a call from his newest target. He adds the DVD of Aaron's death to nearly thirty other DVDs and videotapes of earlier victims.
