What actually happens
He locked himself in on purpose
Shawn plans to livestream a night in Death Manor, a supposedly haunted house where several people have died. On arrival, he tosses his spark plugs into the woods, padlocks the door, and drops the key down a grate, which means he cannot leave. He tells his viewers about Mildred Pratt, a wealthy heiress and failed poet who is said to haunt the house. She died by suicide when her publisher and lover suddenly died. People who lived in the house afterward died in odd ways, and eventually it was left empty. While looking around, Shawn finds a symbol hanging in a closet and destroys it.
Shawn tries a séance to get the spirits going, but strange noises scare him into his room. The noises are Chrissy, a big fan who has come to Death Manor to meet him. They find Mildred's poetry book and use a spirit board to try to speak to her. Chrissy talks Shawn into reading a Latin phrase aloud to put the ghosts to rest. Her behavior wears on him and he tells her to go. She bites his neck, he stabs her in defense, and he leaves, thinking she is dead. When he returns the body is gone. In the grate he finds the key to a box holding a severed finger and a picture showing that Chrissy is really Mildred Pratt. Viewers tell him the symbol was a hamsa that protects against evil and that the Latin phrase is how Mildred binds souls to herself. Ghosts chase him, and he jumps out a second-floor window.
A poem with instructions in it
Outside, Shawn recovers the spark plugs and breaks his tablet while fighting off a ghoul. He is cut off from his viewers and expects to lose, so he sits in his car and reads Mildred's poems. One of them contains the incantation she used to get her powers. He realizes Mildred never wanted a family. She wanted an audience for her poetry. His own audience gives him the idea to finish the ritual, so he goes back into the house, fetches a spare tablet and reads out the viewer comments that translate the incantation. While he sets things up, he apologizes on camera for his stunts, his racism and his bad first apology, and promises to do better.
The sacrifice
After a hard fight with Mildred, Shawn reads the incantation and nothing happens. He sees her severed finger and remembers the ritual needs a sacrifice of flesh. This is the scene to brace for. He cuts off one of his own fingers, and that completes the ritual. It is near the very end of the movie. A hidden force drags Mildred into a basement full of blood, and Shawn celebrates with his viewers, who by now are numerous.
The ending, explained
The ritual works. Mildred is dragged away into the blood-filled basement by something unseen, and Shawn celebrates, thanking his enormous viewer count for getting him through the night. As he is about to leave, he is circled by Mildred's own audience of ghosts, and his livestream cuts out. The stream ends there, so the ending is a cliffhanger. Chrissy was Mildred Pratt all along.
The post-credits ruling
Nobody has confirmed whether there's a scene after the credits, so stay through them if it matters to you.
