A ghost story told in the wrong house
Four teenagers sit in a mansion telling each other an urban legend about a serial killer called the Blissfield Butcher. The Butcher then breaks into that same mansion, kills all four, and leaves with an ancient dagger called La Dola. The next day, Millie Kessler, a bullied student at Blissfield Valley High School, performs as the mascot at the homecoming football game. Afterward she waits near the empty school for a ride, and the Butcher shows up and sticks La Dola into her shoulder. An identical wound appears on his shoulder. Millie's older sister Char, who is a police officer, turns up and scares him off. The police take the dagger as evidence and start a manhunt.

Homeroom with a serial killer
The next morning the Butcher and Millie wake up and find that they have switched bodies, and both head to school. This is the stretch people dread. The Butcher, posing as Millie, goes after Ryler, the girl who bullies Millie the most, and kills her in a cryotherapy tank in the girls' locker room. Then he kills the woodshop teacher, Mr. Bernardi, by cutting him in half with a table saw. He realizes that looking like a teenage girl makes him immune to suspicion. Millie, now in the Butcher's body, tracks down her best friends Nyla and Josh and convinces them it's her. They research La Dola and learn that the swap becomes permanent unless Millie stabs the Butcher with the dagger before midnight.
Monster mini golf, with a real monster
That afternoon the school's official homecoming is cancelled, so the Butcher suggests a new dance at an old mill, which is secretly where he hides. He tricks Booker, Millie's crush, into a monster mini golf course so he can kill him, but Millie, Nyla and Josh get there just in time. Millie knocks out both the Butcher and Booker, and the friends take them to Josh's house and tie the Butcher to a chair. Booker doesn't believe the story until Millie recites a love poem she wrote him anonymously weeks earlier. Josh guards the Butcher while the other three, Millie, Nyla and Booker, head to the police station to get La Dola. Nyla gets Char to leave so she can steal it. In the car, Booker says he has always liked Millie, and Millie says she likes the confidence she feels in the Butcher's body. They kiss.
A dance at a mill nobody should have agreed to
The Butcher gets loose from Josh's house. At the station, Char catches Nyla taking La Dola. Millie sees the Butcher go into the police station and follows, and Char tries to arrest her without knowing what is going on. Millie gets the better of Char and shuts her in a jail cell, and the Butcher leaves in a police car. The dance is held at the mill, and the Butcher kills three jocks who go after him thinking he's Millie, and a fourth who goes after Josh. As midnight gets close, Millie finds the Butcher. Nyla and Josh pin him down, and Booker holds off the police. Millie stabs the Butcher with La Dola, and they swap back just before the police shoot the Butcher down.
The ending, explained
The police shoot the Butcher down just after the swap, and Millie and Booker kiss again. Then the Butcher turns out to have faked his death in an ambulance. He follows Millie home and attacks her, mocking how weak and anxious she is. Millie, Char and their mother fight him until Millie kills him by driving a broken table leg through him. The three of them survive the attack.
