What actually happens
Hell has a waiting list for slashers
Freddy Krueger has been stuck in Hell since his last defeat, and he can no longer reach children in their dreams. The adults of Springwood have wiped out every trace of him and sent anyone who dreams about him to Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital, where they are given a dream suppressant called Hypnocil. His power has shrunk as a result. Looking for a way out, Freddy finds Jason Voorhees, who has also ended up in Hell. Freddy uses the last of his strength to bring Jason back, taking the shape of Jason's mother Pamela, and he steers him toward a massacre on Elm Street. If the town is afraid again, Freddy will get his strength back.
Lori Campbell is a teenager who lives with her father, a widower. She is spending time with Kia and Gibb, her friends, along with Gibb's abusive boyfriend Trey and Trey's friend Blake when Jason murders Trey, then Blake and Blake's father. The police assume Freddy is back, and Lori hears them say his name. Her ex-boyfriend Will Rollins and Will's friend Mark Davis are patients at Westin Hills because of earlier run-ins with Freddy. They catch a news story on the killings, and they break out to warn her. Later that night Lori and her friends head to a rave in a cornfield. This is the scene people dread most, and it happens early. Freddy tries to kill Gibb in a nightmare while she is passed out, but Jason gets to her first, in the real world, and then he rampages through the rave. Freddy realizes that Jason's killing is taking away the victims he needs.
Please do not fall asleep at the Hypnocil heist
The survivors run off with Charlie Linderman, the school nerd, and Bill Freeburg, a stoner. Will says he saw Lori's father kill her mother, and he thinks he was locked away so he couldn't tell anyone. Freddy kills Mark in a dream and burns the words Freddy's Back into his body to spread more fear. A new deputy named Scott Stubbs suspects his colleagues are hiding something about Freddy and starts helping the teenagers. Lori falls asleep, is attacked by Freddy and by accident pulls a piece of him into reality as she wakes. Learning about Hypnocil, the group tries to steal it from Westin Hills so they can stop dreaming. Freddy possesses Bill and throws the drug away, and Jason kills Stubbs in the chaos. The possessed Bill then tranquilizes Jason, but before the sedative fully works Jason slashes him in half.
Camp Crystal Lake, hosted by the dream team
The teenagers plan to pull Freddy into the real world and make him fight Jason, so they haul the unconscious Jason to Camp Crystal Lake. Inside the dream, Freddy torments Jason by using his fear of drowning. Lori goes into the dream to face Freddy and learns that he is the one who murdered her mother. Will had misread what he saw, because her father had been trying to wake her. She wakes up and pulls Freddy into reality just as Jason gets up at Camp Crystal Lake and attacks.
The ending, explained
Charlie tries to hold off Jason to protect Kia, but Jason throws him into a wall and he is impaled and dies. Freddy and Jason fight across the camp. Kia distracts Freddy so Lori and Will can escape, and Jason kills her. Freddy is winning until Lori steps in and Jason punches a hole through Freddy's torso. Freddy stabs Jason in the side with Jason's machete, and Jason rips off Freddy's gloved arm. Lori and Will set the dock on fire, and the explosion sends both killers into the lake. Freddy climbs out and goes after them, but Jason stabs him with the severed arm before sinking back under. Lori finishes the job by cutting off Freddy's head with Jason's machete. The next morning Jason walks out of the lake holding Freddy's head. Freddy winks and laughs, so nobody knows who won.
