A babysitting job that goes wrong in an attic
On Halloween night in 2019, twenty-one-year-old Corey Cunningham is babysitting Jeremy Allen, who locks him in the attic as a prank. When Jeremy's parents arrive home, Corey kicks the door open and knocks Jeremy over a staircase railing by accident, and Jeremy dies. A judge clears Corey of the manslaughter charge, but the people of Haddonfield, Illinois never forgive him. Three years later, the town is still recovering from Michael Myers's killing spree in 2018, and Michael has disappeared. Laurie Strode has started a memoir and shares a house with her granddaughter Allyson, while Corey works at his stepfather's salvage yard. When bullies attack Corey, Laurie takes him to the doctor's office where Allyson works, and Allyson and Corey agree to go to a Halloween party together.

A date night with a sewer cameo
At the party, Mrs. Allen recognizes Corey and confronts him. He leaves and meets the same bullies, who throw him off a bridge. He is knocked out and dragged into the sewers where Michael lives, and Michael chokes him and then lets go. Corey crawls out and a homeless man threatens him, and in the struggle that follows, Corey stabs the man to death and runs. Later, on a dinner date, Allyson's ex-boyfriend, the officer who arrested Corey for Jeremy's death, harasses them both. Corey lures the officer into the sewer, and Michael kills him. Allyson then loses a promotion to a nurse who is sleeping with the doctor, and when Corey hears about it he murders the doctor, and Michael murders the nurse. Laurie realizes Corey has been infected by Michael's evil, but her suspicion damages her relationship with Allyson.
A mask changes hands
On Halloween day, Corey sleeps at the spot where Jeremy died. Laurie finds him and offers her help, but only if he ends things with Allyson. He refuses and says that if he cannot have Allyson, nobody will. He goes back to the sewers, overpowers Michael and takes his mask. Corey then goes on a rampage. He lures the bullies to the salvage yard and kills them, and one of them accidentally kills Corey's stepfather. He then kills his own mother and a radio DJ who mocked him.
The showdown in Laurie's house
This is the part people brace for, and it comes near the end. Laurie fakes a suicide attempt to lure Corey to her house. She shoots him down the stairs, and he stabs himself in the neck so it looks like her doing when Allyson arrives. Allyson leaves upset. Michael shows up to get his mask back, kills Corey, then goes looking for Laurie, and the two of them fight. Laurie pins Michael to the table and takes off his mask, tells him he is only a man, and slits his throat. He pulls his hand free and starts to choke her, until Allyson, who has learned the truth about Corey from Deputy Frank Hawkins, breaks Michael's arm. Laurie slices Michael's wrists, and he bleeds out. It is violent, but Laurie and Allyson both get out of it.
The ending, explained
Laurie and Allyson drive Michael's body to the salvage yard with a police escort, and a procession of Haddonfield residents follows. They watch Laurie put the body into an industrial shredder, which ends Michael's reign of terror. In the days after, Allyson and Laurie make up and Allyson eventually leaves Haddonfield. Laurie finishes her memoir and takes up with Deputy Hawkins again. Corey, the bullies, his parents and the others he killed do not survive. The last shot shows that Laurie kept Michael's mask.
