What actually happens
The fan belt that cost a friend
Twins Carly and Nick Jones, Carly's boyfriend Wade and their friends Dalton, Paige and Blake camp in the woods on the way to a game. A stranger in a pickup truck pulls up, then leaves after Nick breaks one of its headlights. The next morning Wade finds his car's fan belt cut, and a man called Lester offers Wade and Carly a ride to the town of Ambrose. Ambrose is nearly a ghost town. A mechanic, Bo Sinclair, says he can sell them a fan belt once he is back from a funeral. While they wait, they tour Trudy's House of Wax, a tourist trap where everything is made of wax, including the building. Carly and Wade follow Bo to his house, where Wade goes inside to use the bathroom and is seized by Vincent, Bo's twin brother, who hides his disfigured face behind a wax mask. Carly spots the broken headlight on Bo's truck, works out Bo was at the campsite, and runs. Bo catches her and takes her to the cellar of the filling station.

Peeling wax off a friend
Paige and Blake go back to the campsite, because they will not make the game. Nick and Dalton drive into Ambrose to look for Carly and Wade. Carly tries to call for help, and Bo slices the tip off her index finger. She manages to get Nick's attention, and he fights Bo off and rescues her. Meanwhile Dalton finds Wade in the museum, held in place by a coating of wax. This is the scene people dread most, and it happens in the middle. Dalton tries to free Wade by peeling the wax off his face and takes his skin along with it. Vincent ambushes them and slashes off more of Wade's face, and Wade dies of shock at once. Vincent then decapitates Dalton.
The whole town is a sculpture
While looking for help, Carly and Nick realize the wax figures in the museum, and the ones around Ambrose that make it look populated, are the wax-coated bodies of residents and visitors who were lured there. Vincent has been trying to continue the wax sculpting of his mother Trudy Sinclair, the museum's founder, after her death, and Bo has pushed him to turn their victims into more lifelike figures. At the campsite Vincent murders Blake, then chases Paige into an abandoned sugar mill and kills her with a metal pipe. The Joneses later meet Vincent in the museum basement, where Nick accidentally sets off a fire that spreads through the building. Upstairs Nick fights Bo and is stabbed in the leg, and Carly finishes Bo off with a baseball bat. Vincent chases Carly to the top floor, and when she can't talk him down, she stabs him with Nick's help. Vincent's body ends up on top of Bo's, and the Joneses escape as the museum melts down. The next morning, authorities who saw the smoke arrive and report that Ambrose has been abandoned for ten years, since the sugar mill closed. One official is told the Sinclair family had a third son. As the ambulance carries the siblings away, it passes Lester, who smiles and waves goodbye.
The ending, explained
After Bo stabs Nick in the leg, Carly kills him with a baseball bat. Vincent corners Carly upstairs. She attempts to talk him down, it doesn't work, and she and Nick stab him. His body ends up on Bo's as the museum melts. Carly and Nick escape. Authorities arrive the next morning and one official is told the Sinclair family had a third son, and the ambulance carrying the siblings passes Lester, who smiles and waves goodbye. Wade, Dalton, Paige and Blake do not survive.
