What actually happens
Past bedtime, with a VHS tape
In 1996, Owen and Maddy are two isolated teenagers who become friends over The Pink Opaque, a young adult TV show about Isabel and Tara, two girls who use a psychic connection to fight a supervillain named Mr. Melancholy, who can warp time and reality. The show airs past Owen's bedtime and his father disapproves of it, so Owen sneaks over to Maddy's house to watch, and she tapes episodes he misses. Maddy says the show feels more real to her than her own life. Two years later, during an episode, Maddy suddenly starts sobbing and later tells Owen she has decided to run away, expecting him to come along. Owen cannot go through with it and stays behind. Maddy then disappears, Owen's mother Brenda succumbs to cancer, and The Pink Opaque gets canceled after five seasons.
Maddy returns with a theory about the final episode
Ten years on, in 2006, Owen is still at home with his father Frank and has a job at the local movie theater. One night Maddy returns without warning and takes him to a bar where she says it is safe to talk. She refuses to contact the police and instead asks Owen what he remembers about The Pink Opaque, claiming she has spent the last two years living inside the show. She pushes him to rewatch the last episode, where Mr. Melancholy captures Isabel and Tara and traps their minds in a pocket universe called the Midnight Realm, which looks a lot like the real world. His minions bury the two girls alive, and the episode stops abruptly. Owen has a breakdown and tries to push his head through the TV screen, and Frank has to pull him out.
Maddy offers to bury him too
The next night, Maddy tells Owen that after she ran away she still felt unhappy, so she hired a man to bury her alive. Once she had suffocated, she woke up inside The Pink Opaque as Tara. She says they are living in the Midnight Realm and that Owen and she are really Isabel and Tara, and that their real memories have been turned into the episodes of a TV show. She wants to bury Owen alive so the two of them can go back. She takes him to a football field to do it, but Owen pushes her away and runs home, which disappoints her. He never sees Maddy again, and he stays troubled by what she told him.
A birthday party at the family entertainment center
By 2010, Owen's father has died of a stroke and Owen lives alone. One night he streams The Pink Opaque again and finds it sillier and sweeter than he remembered. During the following two decades his depression and asthma worsen, the theater where he worked closes, and a supervisor finds him a job at a family entertainment center. At a child's birthday party there, a middle-aged Owen suddenly screams that he is dying and asks for help, but nobody reacts, and everyone seems to freeze in place while he calls out for his mother. He shuts himself in the bathroom and slices his chest open with a box cutter, and he smiles when he sees a TV screen inside himself. Then he goes back to work and timidly apologizes to the partygoers for the outburst. This is the scene people brace for, and it comes near the end.
The ending, explained
