What actually happens
Jennifer rents a cottage
Jennifer Hills, a short story writer in Manhattan, rents an isolated cottage near the Housatonic River to write her first novel. Johnny Stillman, the gas station manager, and two unemployed men, Stanley Woods and Andy Chirensky, take an interest in her. Matthew Duncan, who is mildly mentally disabled, delivers her groceries. He is friends with the other three and tells them about the woman he met. Stanley and Andy start passing the cottage in their boat and walking around the house after dark.

The assault
This is the part most people dread, and it starts early. Stanley and Andy attack Jennifer on her boat, drag her ashore, and Johnny joins them. The men had planned the attack so that Matthew would take part. In two separate attacks, one by the water and one after she crawls back to her cottage, the men sexually assault her, and Matthew does too after drinking. They tear up her manuscript, and Stanley assaults her once more. She loses consciousness. Johnny decides she is a witness and orders Matthew to kill her. Matthew cannot do it, so he smears her blood on the knife and tells the others she is dead. It is a prolonged sequence.
Jennifer recovers and kills Matthew
Over the following days, a traumatized Jennifer slowly repairs both herself and the torn pages of her novel. She visits a church and asks to be forgiven for what she is about to do. The men learn that she survived and beat up Matthew for lying to them. Jennifer phones in a grocery order, knowing Matthew will be the one to deliver it. He arrives with the groceries and a knife. At the cottage she gets him to go with her to a tree, where she hangs him, and then she drops his body into the water.
Johnny
At the gas station, Jennifer gets Johnny to climb into her car. Halfway to her cottage she stops, draws a gun on him and tells him to take his clothes off. Johnny insists that the assault was her own fault. She pretends to believe him and invites him back to the cottage for a hot bath. When he mentions that Matthew has been reported missing, she tells him she killed Matthew, and he takes it as a joke. She then attacks him with the knife Matthew brought, and then steps out, locks the bathroom door behind her, and listens to opera music while Johnny bleeds to death. Afterward she moves his body to the basement and puts his clothes in the fireplace.
Stanley and Andy
Stanley and Andy find out that Johnny has disappeared, so they head to Jennifer's cottage in their boat. Andy walks to the cottage with an axe. Jennifer swims to the boat and pushes Stanley into the water. Andy tries to attack her, but she gets away with the axe. When Andy swims out to help Stanley, Jennifer sinks the axe into his back and kills him. Stanley reaches the boat's motor and tries to climb aboard, begging her not to kill him. She repeats the demand he made to her during the assault, then starts the motor and speeds away, killing him with the propeller.
The ending, explained
All four men are dead by the end. Matthew is hanged and dropped into the lake, Johnny bleeds to death in the bathroom of the cottage and is left in the basement, Andy is struck in the back with the axe he brought, and Stanley is killed by the boat's propeller as Jennifer drives away. Jennifer is the last one left. The story ends with her speeding away on the water.
