What actually happens
A bathroom door that closes itself
In Pittsburgh in 1999, young Gemma Hall watches her mother Ingrid have what looks like a breakdown, and Gemma witnesses her mother's suicide in the bathroom, after which something supernatural slams the door. Twenty years later Gemma is a dental hygienist and a single mother. She lives with her daughter Maya in the same house she grew up in, and she is dating Nick, a police officer. One day she notices three elderly people walking down the street. One night she astral projects, sees Ingrid's death again, and in a second projection is chased by one of the elderly people. She wakes up to find that she has carried a brooch back from the dream.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
An X-ray machine as a portal
Gemma's next appointment is a cleaning for Lester, who turns out to be one of those elderly people. He bites her finger, she hits her head on the X-ray machine, and she lands in the Further. A blindfolded man ties her to a chair while spirits gather, and he picks one to send toward her. Elise Rainier rescues her, gives her a book, and tells her to come find her. The address leads Gemma to a tattoo shop called Abandon, run by Clare, another astral projector. Elise briefly possesses Clare to explain that Gemma is a courier who can carry objects between the Further and the real world. The blindfolded man wants to use her to resurrect spirits, and the elderly people are his acolytes. That night he attacks Gemma, and she transports half of a body back into the real world.
The neighbors have a VHS tape
Gemma sees the acolytes inside the house across the street. Nick helps her sneak in, and they find a television playing a VHS tape. There Gemma finds out that the blindfolded man is Cyrus Lam, who built his following in the Further by promising to resurrect people. Clare comes to Gemma's house with Elise's plan, which has two parts: lure Cyrus through the Further's Red Door and lock him in, while Nick will wake the acolytes up to stop them from projecting. It is a lot of coordination for a group with one police officer, one tattoo artist and one dental hygienist.
Ingrid's reasons
In the Further, Gemma and Elise are attacked by two acolytes. Back in the real world, Nick breaks into the neighbors' house and finds their owners' bodies. He locates two acolytes under the floorboards and wakes them up. Meanwhile the two find Ingrid in the Further, and Gemma learns that her mother was a courier too, and killed herself to protect Gemma from Cyrus. While watching the old scene again, Gemma slams the bathroom door shut on her younger self and then makes peace with Ingrid. Elise realizes that Maya has inherited the ability. Maya is staying at another neighbor's house, where she falls asleep and astral projects. Lester attacks her in the Further, and Nick cannot wake him.
The house across the street, relocated
This is the scene to brace for, near the end. Cyrus uses Maya to pull dozens of his followers into the real world, and it slowly drains her. Gemma wakes up to save her, but several followers overwhelm Gemma. Elise possesses Lester's body and gets Maya out. Cyrus responds by killing all three of the acolytes who failed him, then corners Gemma. She answers by moving a whole house into the Further. The resurrected dead there are furious that Cyrus never restored them fully, and they turn on him.
The ending, explained
The resurrected dead attack and consume Cyrus. Gemma says goodbye to Elise and Ingrid in the Further, then wakes up in the real world and is reunited with Maya, Nick and Clare. Maya, Gemma, Nick and Clare survive. Cyrus is dead, and so are the three acolytes he killed for failing him. Elise has realized that Maya inherited the ability to astral project.
The post-credits ruling
There is a scene in the middle of the credits. Cyrus comes to in the Further, strapped into a dental chair while a ghostly dentist tortures him, and a demon with keys for fingers shuts them both in a cell behind a red door.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: fine, though one scene will make you worry.
