What actually happens
A holiday booked to avoid thinking about a marriage
Harper Marlowe books a solo holiday in Cotson, a village in Herefordshire, because her husband James has apparently killed himself. Flashbacks show that she was tired of his emotional abuse and manipulation and meant to divorce him. He answered by threatening to kill himself. When he hit her in the face, she locked him out of the flat, and then she watched him drop from the upstairs balcony onto a fence, which killed him. That is the thing she is trying to get away from, and the countryside has other plans.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A landlord with a very large family resemblance
The country house Harper rents belongs to Geoffrey, an eccentric but well-meaning man who gives her a tour. On a walk she finds a disused railway tunnel, and a figure at the other end screams and runs at her. She flees through the forest to an open field, turns to photograph the view on her phone, and sees a naked man in the distance, looking right at her. The next day, on a video call with her friend Riley, she spots the same man in the front garden, with blood on a face scored by scratches. She locks the front door, and he reaches a hand in through the letter box. Harper phones the police, who arrest him, and one of the officers looks like Geoffrey.
A pub where every regular is also Geoffrey
Harper visits a church, where the font is carved with a Green Man and a Sheela na gig. Outside she meets a boy and a vicar, and both have Geoffrey's face. The vicar suggests she is partly to blame for James's death because she wouldn't let him apologize, and she storms off to a pub, where the patrons, the bartender and the policeman all look like Geoffrey as well. The policeman says the naked man has been released. Harper phones Riley, who will drive over in the morning, but her phone signal keeps dropping, and a patron chases her back into the house. A window breaks in the kitchen, and Geoffrey, who has turned up, says a crow caused it and breaks the crow's neck.
A letter box and a very bad idea about knives
Geoffrey steps out to the garden, the lights flicker once more, and the naked man appears and drives Harper back inside. He pushes an arm through the letter box and grabs her hand, and she drives a knife through his arm. He pulls the arm back, the knife tears it open, and the injury looks like the one James had after his fall. The boy and the vicar come into the house in turn, each similarly injured. The vicar then attacks Harper sexually, she stabs him in the stomach, and she gets out of the house.
A car crash and then a family tree
Near the end, Harper tries to drive away, runs over Geoffrey by accident, and is pulled out of the car by him. He takes the car, chases her and crashes it into a stone wall. The naked man approaches in full Green Man form, with an ankle broken like James's. The scene people dread most follows: the naked man gives birth to the boy, the boy to the vicar, and so on through Geoffrey and last of all James. Each body is heavily mutilated. Knowing the order takes some surprise out of it: it is four births in a row, ending with James.
The ending, explained
After the births, Harper and James are sitting together on a sofa indoors. She asks him what he wants from her, and he says what he wants is her love. Pregnant Riley shows up the next morning and follows a trail of blood to Harper, who smiles when she sees her.
