What actually happens
A neighbor with a confiscation policy
On the day before Halloween, a young boy named Dustin James Walters, called D.J., spies on his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker. Nebbercracker yells at children who step onto his property and keeps whatever they drop there. D.J.'s parents head off to a convention and leave him with a teenage babysitter, Elizabeth, known as Zee. After that, D.J.'s friend Charles Peterson, called Chowder, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn and goes to get it. Nebbercracker angrily confronts D.J., then faints, and paramedics take him away. The two boys are convinced he died of a heart attack.

Bones and the kite
Zee's boyfriend Bones comes over and remembers that Nebbercracker once took his kite. He also repeats a rumor that Nebbercracker ate his late wife. Zee throws him out, but on his way he notices his kite caught in the doorway of Nebbercracker's house and tries to take it back, and the house grabs him. D.J. and Chowder go to investigate later and figure out that a poltergeist has taken over the house. They assume it is the angry spirit of Nebbercracker, who they think is dead, and that it is taking revenge on the neighborhood.
Cold medicine for a house with a furnace
The next morning, the boys rescue a girl named Jennifer Bennett, called Jenny, who was selling candy for her school when the house caught her. Jenny calls the police, but when the officers, Landers and Lister, show up, the house plays dead and they dismiss the report. The three kids visit Reginald Skulinski, known as Skull, a local expert on the supernatural, who guesses that the house can only be beaten by striking its heart. They decide the heart is the furnace. To put the house to sleep, they build a dummy, stuff it with cold medicine, and plan to feed it to the house.
The house gets a stomachache
Landers and Lister ruin the plan, and the house swallows all of them. This is the scene to brace for, and it happens around the middle. The house falls asleep, and the kids explore the inside. They find a shrine to Nebbercracker's wife, Constance, whose skeleton is sealed in cement. Then the house wakes up. Jenny grabs the chandelier hanging in its throat like an uvula, and the house throws everyone back up onto the lawn.
Nebbercracker had a good reason to yell
Nebbercracker comes back from the hospital alive and tells the kids that Constance is the house. When he met her, she was an unwilling participant in a freak show, and he helped her escape. She started a new life with him. Then one Halloween some children started harassing her, and she tumbled into the basement of the house, still unfinished, where she was suffocated after a concrete mixer started up by accident in the chaos. When the house was finished, her spirit joined with it. Nebbercracker has been pretending to be mean to children ever since, so they would stay away from the house for their own safety.
The ending, explained
D.J. insists that they have to put Constance to rest. She overhears him, lifts the house off its foundation with two trees, and chases the group. The kids lure her to a nearby construction site, where Chowder fights her with an excavator and D.J. blows up the house with dynamite. Constance's spirit shares a moment with Nebbercracker and then ascends to the afterlife. Nebbercracker returns every stolen toy. Afterward, D.J. and Chowder head out trick-or-treating, an activity D.J. had decided they were too old for. During the credits, everyone the house swallowed comes out of the basement unharmed.
The post-credits ruling
