What actually happens
The model bell tower gets a promotion
Brynn sews for a living and lives by herself in the house she grew up in, in the woods just outside a small town. She is grieving both her mother, Sarah, and her best friend, Maude, and she copes by building a model town in her living room. The real townspeople shun her. One night she wakes up to find a humanoid alien has broken in. It holds her still with telekinesis, and she kills it in self-defense with a broken piece of the model bell tower. She is about to find out that one visitor was not the whole delegation.
Her car and every electrical device in the house have stopped working since the break-in, so Brynn bikes into town. She finds signs that the aliens have attacked her neighbors, though the town itself looks perfectly normal. At the police station she runs into Maude's parents, who are the police chief and his wife. Maude's mother is still bitter and spits in Brynn's face. Brynn leaves on a bus, where several passengers try to hold her down. They turn out to be controlled by alien parasites lodged in their throats. She gets away and realizes that many of the townspeople are now under the same control.
A very convincing day off
Brynn goes home and barricades the place. By nightfall a flying saucer has used a tractor beam to haul the dead alien out of her living room, and two more aliens come for her. She spears the smaller one with the snapped end of a mop handle and sets the bigger one on fire after its legs get caught in her car, by lighting the gas tank. This is the scene people dread most, and it comes in the middle: another alien pins her down and puts a parasite in her mouth, and it seems to be doing so against its own will. Brynn hallucinates a normal life in which Maude never died. She tells Maude she is sorry, breaks out of the hallucination, pulls the parasite out and finds herself lying in a field. Then a saucer turns the parasite into a double of Brynn, which chases her into the woods.
The saucer has questions
The double catches Brynn and stabs her, but she kills it with a box cutter and makes it to a deserted road. There she sees a gigantic alien before a flying saucer pulls her up inside. A group of aliens probes her mind, and the memory they find explains why the town shuns her. As children, Brynn and Maude argued, Maude knocked Brynn to the ground, and Brynn hit Maude with a rock and killed her. Once they have seen the memory, the aliens talk among themselves and seem to settle on a plan. They return Brynn to the road unharmed and free of their control.
The ending, explained
Brynn rebuilds her house and finds that the rest of the town is still controlled by the parasites. The townspeople are now kind to her, and since she has finally dealt with what happened to Maude, she is able to live a normal life. The last shot looks up at the sky, where a great many flying saucers stretch off toward the horizon.
