What actually happens
Hitchhiking with a Dobermann
Back in the 1980s, Claire Redfield and her big brother Chris are kids at the Raccoon City Orphanage, where Claire befriends a disfigured girl named Lisa Trevor. Dr. William Birkin, who works for the Umbrella Corporation and takes children for his research, has been using Lisa as a test subject. Claire escapes the orphanage. In 1998 she hitchhikes back to Raccoon City in a semi-truck, but the driver hits a woman on the road, who vanishes. His Dobermann licks the blood left behind and slowly starts acting erratic. At a diner, the rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy sees that the owner is bleeding from the eyes. Claire warns Chris about Umbrella's experiments and says her source is a journalist, Ben Bertolucci. Once Chris is gone, a bloody, erratic child bursts into the house to get away from his mother, who is in the same state, and Claire gets out.

The mansion has a zombie buffet
At the police station, Chief Brian Irons meets with the STARS Alpha team: Chris, Jill Valentine, Richard Aiken, Brad Vickers and Albert Wesker. They are sent by helicopter to the remote Spencer Mansion, because the Bravo team went missing there. Wesker has not told his teammates that he is working for an unidentified party and has been told to steal William's virus. Inside, they find zombies eating the Bravo team's bodies. Brad is bitten and the helicopter goes down, Richard is devoured, and Chris and Jill flee into a secret passage that Wesker unlocked. Meanwhile the truck driver, bitten by his dog, becomes a zombie and wrecks his truck outside the police station. Irons tries to leave town, but Umbrella guards shoot at him, so back he goes to the station, where Claire and Leon find Bertolucci locked in a cell. A zombie inmate bites Bertolucci and the station is overrun. Leon, Claire and Irons flee to the orphanage in search of a secret Umbrella tunnel to the mansion.
Lisa Trevor, keeper of the keys
Near the end, in the orphanage, a Licker kills Irons and attacks Leon. Lisa shows up and saves him, knows Claire on sight, and hands them the keys to the secret passage. That is the scene to brace for, and the rescue follows right away. Claire and Leon find the lab where Umbrella experimented on children. Wesker is inside with William and his family, they have a shootout, and Wesker shoots William's wife dead in self-defense. Jill then shoots Wesker, and before he apparently dies he tells her to escape on the underground train before Umbrella wipes out the city. Then William gives himself a dose of the G-Virus and mutates.
The ending, explained
Chris, Jill, Claire, Leon and Sherry, William's daughter, get on the train, but it derails when Raccoon City is destroyed, and a monstrous William gets to them. Leon blows the monster up with a rocket launcher. Umbrella announces that the city had no civilian survivors, while the five survivors emerge from the train tunnel and put Raccoon City behind them. In the mid-credits scene, Wesker wakes inside a body bag and can see nothing, and an unknown woman gives him a pair of sunglasses and says her name is Ada Wong.
The post-credits ruling
There is a mid-credits scene. Wesker wakes up in a body bag and is handed sunglasses by a woman who introduces herself as Ada Wong.
