What actually happens
Home alone is still a bad idea
Billy Loomis and Stu Macher went on a killing spree in Woodsboro twenty-five years ago. Now Tara Carpenter, a high school student, is alone at home when Ghostface attacks her, and she is hospitalized. Her older sister Sam, who lives in Modesto and has not been speaking to Tara, hears the news and returns with her boyfriend Richie Kirsch. At the hospital she meets Tara's friends Wes Hicks, Liv McKenzie, Amber Freeman and the twins, Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin. Later that night Ghostface kills Vince Schneider, who is Liv's ex-boyfriend and a nephew of Stu. After meeting Ghostface at the hospital, Sam tells Tara she has been hallucinating Billy, who was involved with their mother while at school and whom Sam learned as a teenager was her biological father. Sam finding that out led to their parents' divorce, and it is why she and Tara drifted apart.

Dewey takes the dangerous part
Sam and Richie ask Dewey Riley for help, and Dewey, who is now divorced from Gale Weathers, calls Gale and Sidney Prescott to warn them. He meets up with Sam and Richie at the twins' house, where Mindy works out that the killer is making a "requel", with Tara and her friends cast as the next generation and Sam's link to Billy used as bait for the older survivors. Ghostface kills Wes and his mother, Sheriff Judy Hicks, at their home. At the hospital, Ghostface goes after Tara and Richie, and Dewey and Sam save them. This is the scene to brace for, and it comes in the middle of the film: Dewey is killed when he tries to finish Ghostface off. The Carpenter sisters and Richie get away.
The party at Stu's old house
Sidney arrives after hearing about Dewey. At the hospital she meets Gale and Sam and asks Sam to help stop Ghostface. Sam refuses and plans to leave town along with Richie and Tara. Sidney and Gale follow them to Amber's house, which turns out to be Stu's old home, where the first Woodsboro massacre took place. During a party for Wes, Ghostface attacks the Meeks twins. When the friends gather, Amber takes Dewey's gun, shoots Liv dead and reveals that she is Ghostface. Sidney and Gale arrive, and Richie turns out to be her accomplice. He stabs Sam, and the two of them take Sam, Sidney and Gale into the same kitchen where Sidney faced Billy and Stu the first time.
Two fans who disliked the latest sequel
Richie and Amber explain that they met online as fans of the Stab movies. They disliked the direction of the latest film, so they started a new killing spree to inspire a better sequel based on real events, and planned to frame Sam. Sam attacks Richie, and Tara attacks Amber but is knocked out. Sidney and Gale fight Amber, and Gale shoots her so that she falls onto a lit stove and catches fire. Richie chases Sam, and a hallucination of Billy guides her to Amber's dropped knife. Sam stabs Richie repeatedly, slits his throat and shoots him to make sure. A badly burned Amber comes at the group once more, and Tara shoots her dead.
The ending, explained
The hospital takes in Tara and the Meeks twins. Sam thanks Sidney and Gale for helping her, and Gale chooses not to write a book on the case, since it would make the killers famous, and writes a tribute to Dewey. Sam rides in the ambulance with Tara while the news covers the night. Amber, Richie, Dewey, Liv, Wes, Judy and Vince are dead. Sam, Tara, Chad, Mindy, Sidney and Gale survive.
