What actually happens
A mall that was not supposed to be there
For years, Sharon Da Silva keeps moving with her adoptive father, Christopher, and the pair use fake names, among them Heather and Harry Mason. Heather believes the police are after them, since Harry killed someone in self-defense. She also thinks a car accident took her adoptive mother. In truth, her father has been hiding her from the Order, a cult from Silent Hill. Rose Da Silva got Sharon out of the fog world with one half of the Seal of Metatron, a talisman, and Rose is still trapped in the town. Heather meets a fellow student, Vincent Cooper, and keeps seeing visions of Silent Hill. A private investigator named Douglas Cartland asks about her identity. Heather warns Harry, but the Order has already taken him to Silent Hill. Heather waits for him at a mall, which slips into the Otherworld, and a monster called the Missionary kills Douglas.

A motel with a confession
Heather escapes back to the real world, but she is now a suspect in Douglas's murder. Vincent takes her home, where they find a message telling Heather to come to Silent Hill and a letter from her father about her real background. Heather and Vincent head for the town and stop at a motel. There Vincent admits that he is the son of Claudia Wolf, the leader of the Order, and that Claudia sent him to make sure Heather went to Silent Hill by choice. He also says Heather is part of Alessa Gillespie, a girl the Order burned 38 years ago, which created the town's shifting dimensions. The argument pulls the motel into the Otherworld, the Missionary grabs Vincent, and he tells her that his grandfather Leonard is the one to find, since he has the other half of the Seal.
Leonard takes the amulet personally
Heather goes into the fog dimension to search for her father and meets Dahlia, Alessa's mother, who tells her Claudia wants to finish what the Order began when it burned Alessa. After a shift into the Otherworld, Heather finds Leonard. He tells her the Seal of Metatron shows "the true nature of things", joins her half to his own, and turns into a monster. Heather is knocked out and carried off, and when she wakes she reaches into his body, takes the amulet and kills him. This is the scene people dread, and it comes in the middle of the movie. As she runs, her pleading calls up Pyramid Head, the creature made to protect Alessa and therefore Heather, and she hides from him. Soon after she sees the Order taking Vincent away, because Claudia has decided he is insane for betraying them.
Everyone gets to the amusement park
Heather rescues Vincent, and the two go to Lakeside Amusement Park, where the Order has hidden its sanctuary. Dark Alessa, the personification of Alessa's anger, confronts Heather. Heather embraces her and absorbs her, which makes Alessa whole again. Claudia is holding Christopher and Vincent hostage, and she explains that Alessa was always meant to carry a god the Order worships, which would punish every sinner when it was born. Remembering Leonard, Heather hands Claudia the Seal of Metatron, which reveals Claudia to be the Missionary. Heather calls on Pyramid Head, who kills the Missionary, and she frees Vincent and Christopher. As the fog lifts, Christopher stays in Silent Hill to look for Rose. Heather and Vincent get a ride from a truck driver named Travis, who says they were lucky. Police cars and a prison transport then drive toward the town, and the fog closes over it.
The ending, explained
Heather absorbs Dark Alessa, gives Claudia the Seal of Metatron and exposes her as the Missionary, then has Pyramid Head kill her. Heather rescues Vincent and her father. Christopher chooses to remain in Silent Hill and look for Rose, and Heather and Vincent get a lift from Travis Grady. As the police cars and a prison transport roll toward the town, the fog covers Silent Hill again. Douglas and Leonard are dead, Claudia is dead, and Rose is still trapped.
