What actually happens
A chair on the ceiling and a toilet on the missing list
In 1995, four-year-old Kevin hurts himself in an incident his six-year-old sister Kaylee blames on sleepwalking. He goes to the hospital and comes home. Later the two wake up in the dark, find that their father has vanished, and see the windows, doors and other things in the house disappearing one by one. Kevin proposes sleeping downstairs in front of the cartoons. They wake up to a dark house, a thumping noise they can't explain and a chair stuck upside down on the ceiling. Then Kevin says their father might have gone with their mom, and Kaylee asks him not to talk about their mother. Then the downstairs toilet disappears. Heading for the upstairs bathroom, Kaylee spots a doll on a bedroom ceiling, Kevin is too scared to go, and the two settle on putting buckets in the downstairs bathroom instead.

Look under the bed, then close your eyes
A voice calls to Kaylee from the dark and asks her to come upstairs, where she sees her father in a bedroom. He says she should look under the bed, and she sees nothing there. Then she sees her mother on the bed. Her mother says she and Dad love both children, tells Kaylee to close her eyes, and vanishes. Kaylee turns to the open closet, and her mother's voice says that someone is there. From inside the closet she hears her mother say her name, along with groans of pain and the sound of bones breaking. A hand reaches around a corner, and Kaylee panics.
The couch holds the hallway for one nap
Kaylee runs downstairs, and she and Kevin push the couch across the hallway the voice was calling from. Kevin falls asleep and the voice calls to Kaylee a second time. When Kevin wakes, Kaylee is gone and toys and other objects hang against a wall. The voice calls Kevin into the basement, where he finds Kaylee with no eyes and no mouth. This is the scene people dread most, in the middle of the film. The voice tells Kevin it wants to play while some of the toys disappear, a kitchen drawer slides open, and Kevin follows its order to push a knife into one of his own eyes.
The 911 call ends with a toy phone
Kevin phones 9-1-1 and says to the operator that he is hurt and feels sick. The operator says adults are on the way and asks him to stay on the line. Kevin says the doors have disappeared and drops the phone, which becomes a Chatter Telephone toy. The voice says it did that and that it can do anything. It says Kaylee wouldn't obey and kept asking for her parents, so it took her mouth.
The ending, explained
The voice tells Kevin to come upstairs. He walks up holding a flashlight and finds himself on the ceiling, then walks into a bedroom that turns into a void. A dollhouse sits atop a heap of toys in a hallway that looks endless, and text on the screen reads 572 days. Kaylee sits on the bed and her body fades away, then her head. Photos appear of people whose faces are missing or distorted. Kevin cries out, and blood splatters on the floor, vanishes, and splatters again, over and over. He tells Kaylee he wants to watch something happy, and the apparition of a door appears. In the dark, a face nobody can identify appears over Kevin in his bed. It tells him to go to sleep. He asks its name twice, and it does not answer.
