What actually happens
A lovely dinner and an unwise invitation
Bjørn and Louise, a Danish couple, are on holiday in Tuscany with their daughter Agnes. They meet Patrick and Karin, a Dutch couple with a son named Abel, and the two families have a pleasant dinner together. The Dutch couple then invite Bjørn and Louise to visit their remote house in the Netherlands, and the Danes say yes. During the first two days, Louise grows uncomfortable with how passive-aggressive the hosts are. She is particularly bothered by how coldly they treat Abel, who was born without a tongue, as they explain to their guests.
Things get worse when the hosts take their guests to dinner and leave the children at home with a babysitter named Muhajid, whom nobody has met. Patrick orders a lot of meat in front of Louise, who is a vegetarian, and he later makes out with his wife at the table while the guests watch. He gets Bjørn to pay the bill and drives home drunk with loud music on. He walks in on Louise in the shower and watches the couple having sex. When Agnes calls for her parents in the night, they don't answer, so Patrick takes her to sleep next to him. Louise finds her there, the family decides to leave, and then turns around because Agnes has lost her toy rabbit, Ninus. Back at the house, the hosts talk them into staying. The couple also learn that Patrick lied about being a doctor and is actually unemployed, and Patrick throws a mug at Abel.
The cabin behind the house
That night Bjørn finds a cabin behind the house. It holds empty luggage and cameras, and the walls are lined with holiday pictures of the Dutch couple posing beside other parents and their little kids. The photos suggest the Dutch couple have a habit of befriending families to harm them and take their children. Bjørn then finds Abel's body in the pool. The family escapes, but Bjørn says nothing to Louise about what he saw. Their car breaks down, Bjørn goes looking for help, and when he returns he finds his wife and daughter sitting inside Patrick's car. Patrick has been following them since he heard their car horn, and he thanks Bjørn for the call.
Scissors at the side of the road
This is the scene people dread, and it comes late in the movie, once the hosts drop the act. Bjørn plays along to keep things calm, but it escalates. Patrick beats Bjørn while Muhajid holds Louise down, and Karin cuts Agnes's tongue out with scissors in front of both parents. Muhajid then takes Agnes away, and Bjørn and Louise are driven to a deserted road. Patrick answers Bjørn's question about why they are doing this by saying "Because you let me." That tells Bjørn and Louise that they played right into the couple's hands.
The ending, explained
Bjørn and Louise are forced to undress and walk into a ditch at the quarry Bjørn had visited with Patrick. They are stoned to death. Before it happens, Bjørn holds Louise one last time and tearfully apologizes to her. Some time later, Agnes, who can no longer speak, lives as Patrick and Karin's daughter and plays the part they need while the couple choose another family to target.
