What actually happens
A lamb mask at the house next door
Talia and Erik Harson are having sex when Talia goes for a shower. Afterward Erik finds the words "you're next" written in her blood on the window, with Talia's body on the floor. Someone in a lamb mask hacks Erik to death with a machete. The movie then switches to Erin, who is heading to a family dinner at the Davison vacation home in rural Missouri with her boyfriend, Crispian Davison. The family is there in force: Crispian's parents Aubrey and Paul, his older brother Drake with Drake's wife Kelly, his younger brother Felix with his girlfriend Zee, and his younger sister Aimee with her boyfriend Tariq.
During the meal, an attacker wearing a tiger mask fires crossbow bolts through the window, and one of them kills Tariq at the table. The family tries to call the police, but someone has blocked the cell signal. Aimee runs outside to find help and runs into a garrote wire that slashes her throat. Aubrey shuts herself in her bedroom, where an intruder wearing a fox mask cuts her down with a machete and then writes "you're next" on the wall in blood. These are the scenes people dread most, and they all come early, in the first stretch of the family dinner.
Erin does the math with a meat tenderizer
Kelly runs to Erik's nearby house and finds his body, and the lamb mask kills her with an axe to the head. Crispian leaves to look for help. The tiger mask attacks Erin, and she stabs his arm, smashes his kneecap and finishes him off with a meat tenderizer. Inside a closet, Paul discovers sleeping bags, empty wrappers and bottles of urine, which shows that the killers have been hiding in the house, and he tells Felix and Zee the attack was planned. The fox mask cuts his throat from behind. Felix and Zee watch him die without reacting, and it turns out they hired the killers to wipe out the family for the inheritance. Erin sets nail traps and tells Zee she grew up on a survivalist compound. Felix tells the wounded Drake that Kelly is dead and then stabs him with screwdrivers.
The blender has a role
The fox mask attacks Erin, who jumps through a window and hurts her leg. She hides in the woods, gets chased back to the house and hides behind a curtain. The lamb mask climbs in through a window and is hurt by a nail trap. Erin overhears Felix, Zee and the two killers arguing, which reveals that the lamb and tiger masks were brothers. A text she sent to emergency services finally goes through, and she ambushes the lamb mask and stabs him dead. She rigs Lamb's axe above the front door as a trap, lures the fox mask into the basement and kills him with a log. Zee and Felix try to kill Erin themselves, and she kills Felix with a blender and Zee with a knife through the top of the head. Felix's phone rings, Erin answers without speaking, and Crispian, thinking he's talking to Felix, reveals he was involved.
The ending, explained
When Crispian comes back, Erin confronts him. He says she was never supposed to be a target and tries to bribe her into keeping quiet. She is disgusted that he would sacrifice his own family for money, and she stabs him in the neck and the eye until he is dead. A police officer then arrives, sees what she did to Crispian and shoots her in the shoulder. He ignores her attempts to stop him, goes into the house, and walks into the axe trap she set above the door.
