What actually happens
A baseball game goes badly
The Abbott family attends a Little League game in Millbrook, New York: parents Evelyn and Lee, their deaf daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau. Something like a meteor falls toward the earth, and then armored, blind creatures with great speed and sharp hearing start attacking anything that makes noise. More than a year later, they have killed most of the population, including Lee and Beau. Regan works out that high-frequency audio disrupts them, and she modifies her cochlear implant so it can send the signal through a handheld microphone. The surviving Abbotts leave their ruined home to look for other people. When they enter a fenced-off area, Evelyn trips a sound alarm, and Marcus puts his foot in a bear trap and yells. A creature turns up. Regan and Evelyn kill it and get Marcus loose, then take cover in an abandoned steel foundry.

A neighbor with a bunker
In the foundry they run into Emmett, an old friend who lost his family and now lives alone in a soundproof bunker. He lets them stay, reluctantly, and does not want to do anything more for them. Marcus keeps picking up the same song, Beyond the Sea, on a radio station. Regan decides someone on the nearby Norwalk Islands is sending it, and that if she can reach the radio tower there, she can broadcast her signal to everyone. She sets out alone and is attacked by a creature, and Emmett rescues her. After that he agrees to go along and help her finish the trip.
Marcus and the air-tight compartment
Evelyn goes out for medical supplies and leaves Marcus at the foundry with the baby. While he explores, Marcus finds the body of Emmett's wife, which startles him enough to make noise, and a creature comes to investigate. This is the scene to brace for: Marcus shuts himself and the baby into a sealed, air-tight space, and they are in danger of suffocating while the creature is in the building. It ends with Evelyn getting back and rescuing both of them. The family then shelters in the bunker while another creature enters the building.
The island has rules
Emmett and Regan get to a marina, where looters ambush them. Emmett deliberately draws creatures to the spot, and they kill the looters. One of the creatures drowns, which shows that they cannot swim. Emmett and Regan take a boat to the island, where a few survivors live in a colony with some safety. Their leader explains that once the government learned that swimming was beyond the creatures, the National Guard tried to evacuate people to the islands, but the noise of boarding drew the creatures in, and only two of twelve boats got away. The next day a creature drifts to the island on a boat, attacks the colonists and kills the leader. Regan and Emmett run to the radio station.
The ending, explained
At the radio station Regan sends the high-frequency signal out, which stops the creature in its tracks, and she kills it with a metal rod. At the foundry, meanwhile, Marcus picks up the broadcast and replays it on a portable radio. That weakens the creature inside, and he shoots it. Regan leaves her cochlear implant hooked up to the station microphone, so the signal keeps playing for any other survivors. Evelyn, Regan, Marcus and the baby are all alive at the end. Emmett is last seen with Regan at the radio station. Lee and Beau are already dead when the story picks up a year later.
