π±CUT TO THE CHASE
How it ends
Lena survives. At the lighthouse she tricks a copy of herself into igniting a grenade, and the Shimmer collapses. Back home, her husband Kane asks if she is really Lena, and she doesn't answer. They embrace, and their eyes shimmer.
The scene you're dreading
The bear, in the middle of the film: it attacks the abandoned military base at night and drags Cassie away, and Lena later finds Cassie's mutilated body. Later it lures Anya out by calling for help in Cassie's voice and kills her. Josie then shoots it.
The dog
There are no dogs in Annihilation, so no dog dies. The mutated bear is shot.
It is an eerie, slow-moving film with one hard bear sequence and an ending that is unsettling because nobody explains it.
THE SHORT VERSION IS HIDDEN
How it ends, the scene you're dreading, what happens to the dog, and the bottom line. About twenty seconds to read.
What actually happens
The Shimmer is a lighthouse problem with a husband attached
Lena is a cellular biology professor and a former US Army soldier. The film starts with her under interrogation, telling the story of an expedition into the Shimmer. This is an anomalous zone that began growing from a meteor that hit the lighthouse at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, and it has been spreading ever since. Every team sent in has disappeared completely. Lena's husband Kane was on one of those teams, and a year later he appears in their home with no explanation. His condition worsens fast, and Lena calls an ambulance. Security forces grab the pair and drive them to a secret facility. Kane goes to intensive care. A psychologist named Dr. Ventress asks Lena to join the next expedition into the Shimmer.
The team is Lena and Ventress plus three more women. Cassie studies landforms, Anya is a paramedic and Josie is a physicist. Once they are inside the Shimmer, they find themselves several days into the trip with no memory of how they got there, and their communication equipment no longer works. They see wildlife with strange mutations, and an albino alligator with several rows of teeth attacks Josie. The group shelters at an abandoned military base and finds a video made by Kane's team. In it, Kane cuts open another soldier's stomach and the contents move around on their own. The soldier's body turns up later, grown over with lichen. That night Lena and Ventress talk about why humans seem built to damage themselves.
The bear learns a new voice
This is the scene people warn about. The mutated bear attacks the military base at night and drags Cassie away. Lena finds her mutilated body later. The survivors move on to a village full of plants shaped like people, and Josie guesses that the Shimmer bends everything inside it the way a prism bends light, including the explorers' DNA. Anya becomes paranoid after seeing her fingerprints change, ties the others to chairs and accuses Lena of killing Cassie. The bear comes back and gets Anya to follow it by calling for help in Cassie's voice. It kills Anya, and then Josie gets loose and shoots it. That is the end of the bear.
A very patient cloud
Ventress tells the group she has cancer and is close to death. She then heads off alone toward the lighthouse in the middle of the Shimmer. Josie decides the Shimmer "refracted" the dying Cassie and made the bear out of her, so that only Cassie's fear and pain were left. She chooses to let the Shimmer turn her into a humanoid plant, so that she won't end up like that. Lena follows Ventress to the lighthouse and finds Kane's remains and a videotape. On the tape, Kane asks someone to find Lena, then kills himself with a phosphorus grenade. A double of Kane walks into the frame after the explosion. Lena goes down into the hole the meteor made. Ventress is there and explains that the Shimmer will consume everything, then turns into a shimmering cloud.
The ending, explained
The cloud absorbs a drop of Lena's blood and becomes a faceless humanoid that copies her movements. It slowly changes into a double of Lena, and she can't outrun it, so she hands it one of Kane's leftover grenades and lets it set the grenade off. Lena runs out of the burning lighthouse, and the Shimmer collapses and vanishes. Back in the present, the interrogation ends. Lena learns that Kane's condition began to improve once the Shimmer fell. She visits him and asks whether he is really Kane. He asks the same question back about her, and she gives no answer. They hug, and both of their eyes shimmer. Of the expedition, Cassie and Anya were killed by the bear, Josie let the Shimmer turn her into a plant, and Ventress dissolved into the cloud.
