What actually happens
A helicopter with strong opinions about one dog
A Norwegian helicopter chases a sled dog across the snow to an American research station. The passenger drops a grenade and blows up the helicopter and himself. The pilot then shoots at the dog and yells at the Americans, who cannot make out a word, and the station commander Garry kills him in self-defense. The American helicopter pilot R. J. MacReady and Dr. Copper fly to the Norwegian camp and find ruins, frozen bodies, and the burned remains of a deformed humanoid. They bring it back, and the biologist Blair finds that it has a normal set of human organs inside. Meanwhile the sled dog is allowed to roam the station all day, and Clark puts it in the kennel. It changes shape and absorbs several of the other dogs. The noise alerts the team, and Childs burns the creature with a flamethrower. Blair's autopsy of the Dog-Thing concludes that it can imitate any living thing perfectly. The Americans follow data from the Norwegian base to a huge excavation holding a half-buried spacecraft that Norris says has been there more than a hundred thousand years. Blair runs a computer simulation showing that the creature could take over every living thing on Earth within a few years, and he begins to lose it. The team sets up rules to limit the risk.

A blood test that someone already destroyed
The humanoid remains absorb Bennings while he is alone, Windows interrupts, and MacReady burns what is left. Blair smashes the vehicles, shoots the rest of the sled dogs and wrecks the radio so nobody can leave, so the team locks him in a tool shed. Copper suggests comparing everyone's blood with a clean stored sample, but the samples have been destroyed. After that the men stop trusting Garry, and MacReady takes over. MacReady, Windows and Nauls find Fuchs's burned body and guess he did it himself to avoid being absorbed. MacReady and Nauls then check MacReady's shack, and in the snowstorm on the way back Nauls leaves MacReady behind, convinced he has been absorbed after seeing his torn clothes.
A heated wire is the only honest man in the room
The group argues over letting MacReady in, and he gets in by threatening them with dynamite. This is the scene people dread, and it comes in the middle of the movie. Norris seems to have a heart attack, and when Copper tries to shock his heart, Norris's chest turns into a huge mouth that bites off Copper's arms, and Copper dies. MacReady burns the Norris-Thing, and its head comes loose and tries to scuttle away before he burns it too. MacReady concludes that every piece of the Thing is a separate creature that wants to survive. He proposes testing everyone's blood with a heated wire, ties the men up, and has to kill Clark when Clark goes for him with a scalpel. Everyone passes except Palmer, whose blood jumps away from the heat. The Palmer-Thing transforms, breaks loose and infects Windows, and MacReady burns them both.
A flying saucer built from vehicle parts
Childs stays behind to watch the main building, and MacReady heads out with Garry and Nauls to run the blood test on Blair. They find the shed empty and a small flying saucer that Blair has been building from vehicle parts, which they destroy. When they get back, Childs is missing, the generator is wrecked, and the building has no heat. MacReady figures that the Thing has no way out, so it plans to go dormant and wait for rescuers to show up. The three men decide it cannot be allowed off the ice and rig the station with explosives. The Blair-Thing then kills Garry, Nauls vanishes, and the Blair-Thing grows into an enormous creature and smashes the detonator.
The ending, explained
MacReady sets off the explosives with a stick of dynamite and destroys both the station and the Blair-Thing. He sits by the burning wreck until Childs walks back and says he got lost in the storm while chasing Blair. They are exhausted and slowly freezing, and they admit that distrusting each other no longer makes sense. They share a bottle of whisky. Copper, Clark, Windows, Garry, Bennings, Fuchs and Norris are dead. Palmer and Blair have been absorbed, and Nauls has disappeared.
The post-credits ruling
There is no post-credits scene. You can leave when the credits start.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: not fine, and the kennel scene is early.
Questions people ask at 1am
Is The Thing scary?
The Thing is a 7 out of 10 with high dread. There are a few sudden shocks and some extremely messy creature scenes, but the lasting fear is not knowing who in the room is still human.
How does The Thing end?
MacReady blows up the station and the Blair-Thing with dynamite. Childs then returns from the storm, and the two survivors share a bottle of whisky while they freeze.
Does the dog die in The Thing?
Yes, dogs die in The Thing. The dog-creature absorbs several station dogs in the kennel early on, and Blair kills the rest. The original sled dog is the creature.
Is there a post-credits scene in The Thing?
No. The Thing has no post-credits scene, so you can leave when the credits start.
What is the Thing in The Thing?
It is an alien organism that can imitate any living creature perfectly and take it over. In The Thing it was buried in a spacecraft for over a hundred thousand years, and every piece of it acts as its own life-form.
