What actually happens
A motel with a slapping mother
Jenny Greengrass and her boyfriend, Steve Taylor, head out for a weekend at Eden Lake, a remote part of the English countryside. On the way, Steve complains about teenagers' antisocial behavior and criticizes how adults raise them. In town, the couple notice that the residents act strangely, and at the motel they see a mother aggressively slap her son. The next day they drive into the forest to camp by the lake, and on the way they meet a boy named Adam. A gang of rowdy teenagers led by Brett, who is a psychopath, then disrupts their getaway. The next morning their food is covered in insects, so they suspect the youths. On the way to town for more, their car tire is punctured by a glass bottle the teens left on the road. At a restaurant, Steve tells a waitress about the teens, and she insists that her own kids would not bother anybody. Steve later sneaks into a house he thinks belongs to the teens and runs when a surly homeowner named Jon comes back.

A Jeep goes missing
The couple go back to the lake and swim together. When they return to the beach, their Jeep and belongings are gone. They start walking toward town and have to dodge Brett, who is driving the Jeep. After dark they find the whole gang with Brett in the woods. Steve threatens them, and members of the gang draw knives. Brett's dog gets stabbed in the scuffle, and Brett flies into a rage. The couple try to flee, but the gang makes them crash the Jeep. With Steve trapped, Jenny runs, and he is captured.
The rock at daybreak
This is the scene people dread, and it comes in the middle. At daybreak, Jenny sees the gang tie Steve to a rock with barbed wire. Brett orders each member of the gang to stab Steve so that they are all implicated, and Paige, the only girl in the gang, records it all on her phone. Jenny draws the gang's attention away so that Steve can get loose, but his wounds are too serious for her to treat, and she has to run for help. Steve dies of the wounds.
A boy who is not on her side
Jenny runs into Adam, the boy she and Steve met earlier, and he tells the gang where she is. They capture her and tie her and Steve's body to a stack of wood. Brett forces Adam to set it on fire while Paige films. Jenny escapes, which angers Brett, and he punishes Adam. Jenny accidentally kills Cooper, a younger, reluctant member of the gang who was trying to help her. Finding Cooper's body, Brett beats another gang member to death. Paige runs away in fear. Jenny stops a driver on the road, then realizes he is the older brother of Ricky, one of the gang. She steals his van and runs over Paige while speeding off. Jenny returns to town and crashes the van into a backyard party.
The ending, explained
Jenny wakes up in a house, comforted by a woman and by Jon. The adults at the party hear that all the dead teenagers are their children, and Jenny realizes whose home she is in: Brett's. With no place to hide, she locks herself in the bathroom, but Jon kicks the door down. She pleads, but Brett claims that she and Steve killed his friends and his dog. Jon and two other men attack Jenny violently. Brett goes to his room, blocks out the sound of her screams and deletes the videos of the gang's crimes from Paige's phone. The movie ends on Brett staring blankly into a mirror, wearing Steve's sunglasses.
