What actually happens
Rock climbing, then a road with a fence in it
The movie opens with two college students, Rich and Halley, climbing a cliff in West Virginia. Rich reaches the top and is killed. Someone hauls on Halley's rope, so she cuts it and falls. She gets tangled in barbed wire on the ground and is dragged into the woods, screaming. Some time later, a medical student named Chris is driving to a business meeting when traffic stops. He leaves for a remote mountain road, asks a gas station owner named Maynard for directions, gets nothing useful, and picks Bear Mountain Road off a map. He promptly drives into a stopped car belonging to Jessie, Carly, Scott, Evan and Francine, five college students on a camping trip. Their tires are punctured, and the cause turns out to be barbed wire that someone laid across the road deliberately.

The cabin has a very specific décor
Evan and Francine stay with the cars while the others go to look for help. Evan hears something in the woods and vanishes, Francine finds his ear on the ground, and then someone strangles her with barbed wire. The rest of the group finds an isolated cabin and goes in, where they discover human body parts. The residents come home before they can leave, so everyone hides. Three men enter carrying Francine's body: Three Finger, Saw Tooth and One Eye, who are cannibals. The hiding group has to watch them dismember her and eat her. That is the scene people dread most, and it comes early, while the group is stuck in a hiding place and the cannibals are in the room. After this it turns into a chase.
A watchtower with one working radio
Once the cannibals fall asleep, the group tries to sneak out, but the men wake up and give chase through the trees. The group finds cars that belonged to earlier victims. Chris is shot in the leg while distracting the cannibals, and the others find Evan's body in a truck. Scott draws the attackers away so the rest can run and is killed with arrows. Jessie, Carly and Chris reach an old watchtower and use its radio to call for help, which also tells the cannibals where they are. The cannibals set the tower on fire, and the three jump into the trees. Carly is killed with an axe by Three Finger, and Chris throws Three Finger from the treetops. Jessie and Chris hide behind a waterfall, where she says she feels responsible, since the trip was meant to cheer her up after a breakup. By morning the cannibals have found them, and Jessie is taken back to the cabin.
Chris returns with a police truck and a plan
Chris survives being pushed down a hill and meets a police officer, who is shot by Saw Tooth right away. Chris hides in the woods while Saw Tooth takes the dead officer's keys and heads for the cabin in the police truck. Chris then sneaks out and clings to the underside of the truck to follow it. Inside the cabin, Jessie is tied to a bed and watches the cannibals cut off the dead officer's head. Chris arrives, sets fire to the cabin, and crashes the police truck into it. He frees Jessie, and as they flee, he shoots a fuel tank to blow up the building. The two escape in the cannibals' pickup truck. On the way out, Chris stops at Maynard's gas station and tears the map off the wall before driving on.
The ending, explained
Chris and Jessie are the only survivors of the group. Rich, Evan, Francine, Scott and Carly have been killed, and so has the police officer. Halley was dragged into the woods in the opening. Chris burns down the cabin and blows up what is left, then drives Jessie away in the cannibals' pickup, stopping only to rip a map off the wall at Maynard's gas station. Three Finger, however, has not died. A deputy sheriff who heard the earlier radio call walks through the remains of the cabin and is killed by Three Finger, who is laughing.
The post-credits ruling
There is a scene after the credits start. A deputy sheriff who got the earlier radio call investigates the wrecked cabin, and Three Finger, who survived the explosion, kills him.
✓ Spoiled safelyDog status: no dog appears in it, so none can die.
