What actually happens
A gift shop with cryptic opinions
Millennial couple Chase and Laine drive to the Horror Hound festival in rural Louisiana. Chase is obsessed with the paranormal, especially the local legend of the Creeper, a creature that spends twenty-three days every twenty-three years killing and eating hundreds of people. He plans to propose, and Laine, without telling him, suspects she is pregnant. Meanwhile the Creeper wakes up and starts feeding to build its strength. At a gift shop, Laine touches a mysterious artifact and has a premonition, and the owner, Lady Manilla, gives the couple cryptic messages. At the hotel Laine starts a pregnancy test, but a crow hits the window and interrupts her.
At the festival Laine picks up a shuriken and turns out to be unusually good at throwing it. The Creeper arrives and starts hunting, and it uses its truck to knock out the internet. The couple enters a raffle run by the organizer, Madam Carnage, for a chance at a night in an old abandoned plantation house, now an escape room. Laine starts to have visions of herself taking part in a ritual inside that house. A cameraman and a crew come along to document the stay, plus a local tour guide named Stu.
The wrong time for a proposal
This is the scene to brace for, and it comes in the middle of the movie. On the way to the house the group crosses an eighteenth-century graveyard. The Creeper kills the cameraman and grabs Laine just as Chase proposes. Laine wakes tied to a table, and the Creeper stabs a knife into her abdomen. She survives it. Back at the house, the others argue about what to do, and Stu fires his pistol into the air, which draws the Creeper over. It abandons Laine and hunts the rest of the group through the house, killing everyone except Stu and Chase.
The ending, explained
Laine frees herself and rejoins Chase and Stu, and she tells Chase about the pregnancy and says the Creeper is after her because of it. They learn that Madam Carnage, Lady Manilla and others worship the Creeper and have been luring victims to the house for it. The plan is for Laine to draw the Creeper outside while Chase and Stu tip the weather vane onto it. Laine blinds it with its own shuriken, and the vane falls and impales it. A flock of crows devours the Creeper, pushes Stu off the roof and kills him, and flies off into the night. Laine and Chase leave. Somewhere else, the Creeper regenerates and lets out a devilish roar.
The post-credits ruling
Nobody has confirmed whether there is a scene after the credits.
