What actually happens
A bedsit with a previous tenant
Ellie Turner is a sweet, naive teenager from near Redruth, Cornwall, who is devoted to Swinging Sixties music and clothes and wants to design fashion. Her mother, also a designer, died by suicide when Ellie was a child, and Ellie was raised by her grandmother. She sometimes sees her mother's ghost in mirrors, and her grandmother knows. Ellie moves to London to study at the London College of Fashion, where her roommate Jocasta bullies her and only John, the one male student, is kind to her. She moves into a bedsit owned by an elderly woman, Ms. Collins. That night she dreams she is in the 1960s, at the Paris club, watching a confident blonde woman named Sandie ask about singing at the club. Sandie starts seeing Jack, the charming manager. In the morning Ellie sketches a dress based on Sandie and finds a love bite on her own neck.
More dreams follow, including Sandie's audition at a Soho nightclub that Jack arranged. Ellie dyes her hair blonde, copies Sandie's style and takes a job at a pub, where a silver-haired man notices how much she resembles Sandie. In later dreams Ellie learns that Sandie's life has gone badly and Jack is pimping her to his male business associates. While awake, Ellie is troubled by menacing figures who look like Jack and the men who used Sandie. After a vision in which Jack seems to murder Sandie, Ellie decides the silver-haired man is Jack. She goes to the police, who do not take her seriously, and she finds newspaper stories about local men who vanished instead of reports of a murder. She confronts the silver-haired man, who denies it and leaves the pub, and is struck by a taxi and killed. Her boss then tells her his name was Lindsey, and Ellie remembers him from her dreams as an undercover vice officer who tried to get Sandie out of that life.
The landlady has opinions about the floorboards
Ellie tells Ms. Collins she is leaving London, and Ms. Collins says she knows Ellie went to the police, because the kind policewoman came by to check on her. The landlady then says she is Sandie. What Ellie took for Sandie's murder was Sandie killing Jack after he threatened her with a knife. Sandie went on to lure the men who had used her back to her room, kill them, and hide the bodies in the floorboards and walls. To keep Ellie quiet, Ms. Collins drugs her tea, and in the struggle that follows an ashtray goes over and a fire starts. John arrives to help and is stabbed, and Ms. Collins keeps going after Ellie, who hallucinates her as the young Sandie on a glass staircase. This is the scene to brace for, and it comes near the end. Ellie kicks her down the stairs and runs to her room, and the ghosts of the dead men ask her to avenge them, which she refuses to do. With police outside, Ms. Collins tries to take her own life, and Ellie stops her. Sandie urges Ellie to get herself and John out, and stays behind in the burning building.
The ending, explained
Ellie's designs get a showing at the end-of-year fashion show, where her grandmother and John congratulate her. In a mirror Ellie sees her mother smiling at her, and then Sandie appears in another mirror and sends her a kiss. Ellie and John survive the fire. Lindsey was killed by a taxi earlier, Jack and the other men were already dead in the house, and Sandie stayed inside the building as it burned.
