Is Lovecraft Country Scary? The Verdict and the Whole Plot
Yes, 6 out of 10. Shoggoths and ghosts do the jumping, and the 1950s sheriffs and mobs are the harder part to watch.
Ruling: It has shoggoths and haunted houses, but the cruelty of 1950s America is the harder part to sit through.
Lovecraft Country is ten episodes in a single season, each about an hour long. The first one sends three travelers into Devon County, Massachusetts, where the sheriff is very eager to enforce the sundown law.
The premise, briefly
Atticus Freeman, his uncle George and his friend Letitia drive across 1950s Jim Crow America to find his missing father, and the route goes through a county with a sundown law and a wizard mansion.
The verdict above is spoiler-free. Everything below, including the ending, stays hidden until you pick a depth.
Christina Braithwhite completes her ritual and becomes immortal, but a binding spell stops her from ever doing magic again. Atticus dies of blood loss, and Diana then kills Christina with a new mechanical arm while Christina is pinned under rubble.
Early in the first episode, just after sunset, the sheriff's deputies march Atticus, George and Leti into the woods to lynch them. Shoggoths attack the whole group, the deputies die, and the three travelers fight their way out.
No dog dies in Lovecraft Country. A goat is sacrificed in the third episode, in case that matters to you.
Lovecraft Country mixes jump scares with racist violence, and the violence is the harder part to sit through.
How it ends, the scene you're dreading, what happens to the dog, and the bottom line. About twenty seconds to read.
What actually happens
A sundown law and a very large mansion
Atticus Freeman, a Korean War veteran, arrives in Chicago and finds a letter from his missing father, Montrose, telling him to come to Ardham, Massachusetts. He sets out with his uncle George, who writes a travel guide for Black motorists, and his friend Leti. A white mob chases them out of the first town, and a white woman nobody knows flips the mob's car. In Devon County, Sheriff Eustice Hunt is keen to enforce the sundown law, and after dark his deputies march the travelers into the woods to lynch them. This is the scene people brace for, and it comes in the first episode: shoggoths attack everyone, the deputies die, Atticus, George and Leti fight free, and a whistle calls the shoggoths off. In the morning they find a huge mansion and a friendly man named William. In the second episode he explains it is Ardham Lodge, built by Titus Braithwhite, a slave trader who founded the Sons of Adam, a secret society of wizards. Atticus is Titus's descendant, so Samuel Braithwhite plans to use him in a ritual. Samuel shoots Leti, and the ritual ends with George dead, Leti revived and the mansion on fire.

A bargain Victorian with some history
Leti inherits money from her late mother three weeks after George's funeral and spends it on a run-down Victorian house in an all-white part of Chicago's North Side. She fills it with Black renters and her half-sister Ruby. The neighbors burn a cross on the lawn, and a white supremacist police captain named Lancaster threatens her. The house is also haunted. Its previous owner, a scientist named Hiram Epstein, abducted eight Black people, experimented on them, killed them with Lancaster's help and buried them under the floor. With a medium and the spirits, Leti banishes Epstein's ghost. Atticus then finds Christina Braithwhite, who survived the fire, and works out that she arranged the inheritance. She wants help finding missing pages of the Book of Names, and he tries to shoot her but can't. In the fourth episode Montrose learns that pages belonging to Titus are in a Boston museum vault. Atticus, Leti and Montrose break in and find a corpse bent over the pages, which wakes up as Yahima, an Arawak Two-Spirit whom Titus locked away. The vault floods and all four barely escape. Back in Chicago, Montrose murders Yahima.
A potion with a good rate of return
In the fifth episode Ruby sleeps with William and wakes up as a white woman, thanks to his metamorphosis potion. Montrose tells Atticus he destroyed the pages, and Atticus nearly beats him to death. Ruby keeps using the potion, takes a department store job under the name Hillary, and plants a runic stone in Lancaster's office for Christina. When her boss Paul tries to sexually assault a coworker, Ruby attacks him, after Christina tells her to embrace power. Then William turns into Christina in front of her, so the two were the same person. Atticus translates something that makes him phone Ji-Ah in South Korea. The sixth episode goes back to 1949, where Ji-Ah is possessed by a kumiho, a nine-tailed fox spirit. She has to kill 100 men to become human again. During the Korean War she plans to seduce and kill Atticus, falls in love with him instead, and her tails attack him while they are together. She sees that he will die if he goes home to America, so he ends the relationship.
An orrery that does more than tell time
Hippolyta finds a key hidden in the orrery at the ruins of Ardham Lodge. Leti and Atticus both dream of Hanna, his slave ancestor, and work out that she fled with the Book of Names, which was later lost when white mobs destroyed Tulsa in 1921 in the race massacre. Atticus also learns that Montrose is gay, and Leti learns she is pregnant. At the Winthrop observatory, Hippolyta uses the key, a portal opens, and she and Atticus fall through. She meets Josephine Baker in 1920s Paris, becomes a Dahomey Amazon and meets George again. In the eighth episode, Lancaster curses Diana with two spirits, Topsy and Bopsy, after she refuses to hand over the orrery. Atticus gives Christina the key in exchange for spell lessons, who plans to sacrifice him at the fall equinox. He says he saw the future, in which he and Leti have a son named George who writes the book Lovecraft Country. Two men kill Christina the way Emmett Till was killed, and she revives. Lancaster's police shoot up Leti's house until a shoggoth kills them and tears off Lancaster's arm.
Tulsa, 1921, by way of a multiverse machine
In the ninth episode Hippolyta comes home to find Diana still cursed. Christina uses Hippolyta's blood to reset the curse, though it can't be lifted fully, and she talks Ruby into helping her reach immortality, even after Ruby learns the spell will kill Tic. The others use Hiram's multiverse machine to travel to Tulsa in 1921, where Tic's mother's family kept the Book of Names before it burned. A white mob kills Thomas, a man young Montrose had turned away. Leti gets Tic's great-grandmother to give up the book by promising to protect the family, and the trio flee the burning city back to 1955. In the tenth episode, Tic and Leti open the book and enter an ancestral realm, where Tic's mother tells him that a sacrifice of himself is coming. They lift Diana's curse, though her arm stays withered, and they summon Titus to take a piece of his flesh for a binding spell. At Ardham, Christina's followers strap Tic to an altar, Ruby turns out to be Christina in disguise, and Christina pushes Leti from a tower.
The ending, explained
Christina covers herself in Tic's blood and finishes the ceremony, which makes her immortal. Leti, who survived the fall from the tower, tries to kill her anyway and then tries the binding spell, but it fails without a piece of Christina's body. Ji-Ah links Tic and Christina with her tails, and the spell works: Christina can never perform magic again, and neither can any other white person. Tic dies of blood loss. Christina is trapped under rubble and helpless, and Diana, wearing the mechanical arm her mother made for her, kills her.
