What actually happens
A funhouse mirror that looks back
In 1986, a young Adelaide Thomas strays from her parents on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, walks into a funhouse, and finds a double of herself among the mirrors. Afterward she goes silent and keeps her distance from her family. Thirty-three years later she reluctantly joins her husband Gabe and their kids Zora and Jason on a beach vacation with their friends, Josh and Kitty Tyler and their twin daughters Becca and Lindsey. On the beach, paramedics carry off a dead man whose sign matches the one Adelaide saw on the day she met her double. Later, Jason spots a man who looks like the dead one standing completely still with his arms out and bloody hands.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
Four strangers in the driveway
That night Adelaide tells Gabe her story, and the lights go out. Jason sees a family of four standing in the driveway, and then they break in and corner the Wilsons. These are the Wilsons' doubles: Red, Adelaide's counterpart, Pluto for Jason, Umbrae for Zora, and Abraham for Gabe. Red is the only one who talks, and her voice is raspy. She says they call themselves the Tethered because a single soul is split between each of them and a person above ground, and they have come to cut the cord. That is the scene to brace for, and it comes early in the movie, on the first night. The Wilsons get separated and terrorized, and Jason finds out that Pluto copies what he does. Gabe kills Abraham, and the family escapes.
Mexico is a long drive from a house full of doubles
The Tyler family is murdered at home by their own doubles. The Wilsons walk in on it, get attacked too, and manage to kill the Tyler doubles. On the news they see that the Tethered have been killing their counterparts across the city and then linking hands in a chain around it. The Wilsons decide to drive down the coast and escape to Mexico. Umbrae catches up to their car, and Zora throws her off and kills her. Adelaide then goes over on her own to comfort Umbrae while she dies.
Down the rabbit hole, literally
The Wilsons reach the boardwalk and find a lot of the townspeople slaughtered and a burning car across the road. Jason sees that it is a trap set by Pluto and tells everyone to get out. He walks backward so that Pluto mimics him and walks into the fire, which upsets Adelaide. While they watch Pluto burn, Red grabs Jason. Adelaide chases her to the funhouse and finds a hidden entrance to an underground complex full of white rabbits. Red explains that the Tethered were made as copies, probably by the government, to control people above. The experiment failed and they were left underground to imitate their counterparts and eat raw rabbit. Red, who is different, spent years organizing the others to escape and take revenge. Adelaide and Red fight, Red dodges everything, and Adelaide wins by letting Red attack her first. She impales Red with a poker, strangles her, and breaks her neck, then finds Jason in a locker. Jason also frees one of the rabbits.
The ending, explained
Adelaide escapes in an ambulance with her family and remembers the night she met Red. She was the Tethered double, and Red was the original Adelaide. After choking the real Adelaide unconscious, her double dragged her underground and took her place at the surface. Jason looks at his mother, who only smiles. Across the country, the Tethered link hands in a human chain. Gabe, Zora and Jason survive, along with Adelaide. Pluto, Umbrae and Abraham are dead, and so are the Tyler family.

Questions people ask at 1am
Is Us scary?
Us is a 6 out of 10 with medium dread. The jump scares are minor, and most of the fear comes from the home invasion by identical doubles and a late twist that makes the early scenes look different.
How does Us end?
Adelaide kills Red and flees with her family, then realizes she is the Tethered double and Red was the original Adelaide. Meanwhile the Tethered form a human chain across the countryside.
Does the dog die in Us?
No. There is no dog in Us, neither a real one nor a Tethered one. An animal does die, and it is a rabbit.
Is there a post-credits scene in Us?
No. Us has no post-credits scene, so you can leave when the credits start.
Who are the Tethered in Us?
In Us, the Tethered are underground duplicates of the people above, probably made by the government to control them. They are tied to their counterparts and spend the movie coming up to kill them.
