What actually happens
A farmhouse near a church with a murder in its past
Dylan Collins wakes up from a nightmare about three people being murdered in a cornfield. Dylan, his twin Zach and their mother Courtney are squatting in a farmhouse after running from Courtney's abusive husband, Clint. Dylan keeps having nightmares about families being killed, and ghostly children visit him and make him watch films of them murdering their own families. Ex-Deputy So & So, who now works as a private investigator, is looking into killings tied to Bughuul. He comes to the farmhouse and meets Courtney and the boys, and he tells Courtney he is looking into a nearby church where a murder took place. When Clint shows up and tries to take the boys, So & So drives him away. He also convinces Courtney not to leave, because he believes running would let Bughuul's cycle of murders carry on. Courtney invites him to stay the night.
So & So visits Professor Stromberg, who owns a ham radio that once belonged to Professor Jonas, who vanished. Stromberg says a Norwegian family owned the radio in 1973, and that Bughuul is summoned by ritual sacrifice that always involves three things: a murdered family, missing children and artwork of Bughuul. The radio switches on by itself, and So & So tells Stromberg to destroy it. At the farmhouse, Zach turns on Dylan out of jealousy over the attention the ghost children give him. When Dylan will not sit through another film of a murdered family, the children tell him he is not their real target, and they turn to Zach. Clint turns up with a court order and brings Courtney and the boys back to his house. So & So comes to warn them about Bughuul, and Clint beats him up. The following day, Zach films his family relaxing in the yard and spikes their drinks. That night Dylan calls So & So for help while he and his parents pass out.
Scarecrow posts and a camera
Near the end, Courtney, Dylan and Clint are strapped to scarecrow posts, hoods over their faces, which matches Dylan's first nightmare. Zach pours gasoline over them and films as Clint burns. This is the scene to brace for. So & So hits Zach with his car before he can light Dylan. He frees Courtney and Dylan, and they run. Zach follows and sees So & So use a sickle to cut off several of his own fingers. In the house, the ghost children help Zach find Courtney and Dylan. So & So smashes the camera before Zach can kill them, which breaks Bughuul's spell, and Bughuul appears and kills Zach. So & So, Dylan and Courtney get out, and Bughuul sets the house on fire behind them.
The ending, explained
So & So, Dylan and Courtney escape the burning house after Bughuul kills Zach. Clint died earlier, burned by Zach at the posts. Later, So & So is packing up at his motel, ready to leave with Courtney and Dylan, when he finds the ham radio in his room. The ghost children start speaking to him through it, and Bughuul suddenly appears. Courtney and Dylan are the only members of the family still alive.
