DOG
Dog: fine
no dog dies, and there are no live animals.
Ruling: Watch it if you can handle tight spaces and creatures in the dark, and skip it before a swim.
Underwater runs ninety-five minutes at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. An earthquake wrecks a drilling facility, the escape pods are already gone, and the crew has to walk to another station in pressurized suits.
The premise, briefly
After an earthquake destroys their deep-sea drilling station, a handful of survivors have to cross the ocean floor on foot to reach another one, and something else is down there.

π±CUT TO THE CHASE
How it ends
Norah overloads the nuclear core of the Roebuck station, which destroys the creatures and lets Emily and Liam reach the surface in escape pods. Norah does not make it, and only two people survive overall.
The scene you're dreading
Early on, Liam and Paul follow a distress beacon to a body in the rubble, and a creature comes out of its back and goes for them. Liam kills it and drags it inside.
The dog
No dog dies in Underwater. The movie has no live animals, only invented sea creatures, and a stuffed bunny one character carries survives.
Underwater is a creature feature in tight spaces, and knowing Norah saves two people removes the guessing about who gets out.
THE SHORT VERSION IS HIDDEN

What actually happens
No escape pods, one captain
In 2050, the Kepler 822, a Tian Industries drilling facility on the floor of the Mariana Trench, is hit by what everyone assumes is an earthquake. Part of it is destroyed. A mechanical engineer named Norah Price heads for the escape pods with two colleagues, Rodrigo and Paul. Every pod has already launched, and the only other person there is Captain Lucien. The group finds two more survivors at a control base, the biologist Emily Haversham and the engineer Liam Smith, who have been unable to make contact with the surface. Lucien proposes a plan: wear pressurized suits and walk a mile across the sea floor to another station, Roebuck 641, and try to get out from there.
The first death happens in the freight elevator on the way down: Rodrigo's helmet is defective, and the water pressure implodes it. Soon after, the crew sees a distress beacon from a pod further down, and Liam and Paul go to look. This is the scene people dread, and it comes early. Among the rubble is a body, and a creature bursts out of its back and attacks them. Liam kills it and carries it inside. Emily studies the creature and concludes it belongs to a species nobody had found before. The five set out across the sea floor, and the Kepler blows up overhead, almost burying them under falling wreckage. Liam is hit, Norah and Lucien save him, and they reach an intermediate station to charge and clean their suits. They find that his oxygen scrubber is badly damaged.
Everyone gets a turn at the dangerous part
In the access tunnel, an unseen creature grabs Paul, drags him underwater and kills him. The toxic fumes from the explosion mean Liam's damaged oxygen supply will suffocate him, and Norah, Lucien and Emily refuse to leave him behind. They set off to help him walk. A humanoid creature shows up and pulls Liam into a cave. Lucien gets Liam out, but then Norah is dragged along with Lucien, and he sacrifices himself to spare her the rising pressure. Norah ends up alone at the empty Shepard station, swaps her damaged suit for a working one and heads on to Roebuck. On the way she finds Emily and Liam and helps drag him. Inside Roebuck, they find humanoid creatures clustered in a nest on the ceiling. They try to sneak past, but Emily's oxygen alarm wakes them. One partly swallows Norah, and she kills it to get free.
The ending, explained
Norah, Emily and Liam reach Roebuck's escape pod bay, but only two of the pods work. Norah gets the injured Liam into one, then persuades Emily to take the other. A gigantic creature attacks Roebuck while the smaller ones chase the pods. Norah accepts that she will not make it, and she overloads Roebuck's nuclear core. The explosion destroys the creatures and lets both pods reach the surface. Norah dies in the blast. During the credits, news headlines report only two survivors, and Tian Industries stays out of the investigations because it plans to drill even more.
The post-credits ruling
There is no scene after the credits. News headlines play over the credits themselves, so you can leave once they have gone by.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: no dog dies, and there are no live animals.
