What actually happens
A mailed doll and a very short stay for the priest
Nine years after Chucky was supposedly finished off, a package turns up for Sarah Pierce, who lives with her paraplegic daughter Nica. Inside is a Good Guys doll. Sarah is confused, so she throws it away. That night Nica wakes to the sound of her mother screaming and finds her dead, and the death is ruled a suicide. Then the relatives arrive: Nica's older sister Barb, Barb's husband Ian, their daughter Alice, the live-in nanny Jill (who is secretly having an affair with Barb), and a priest, Father Frank. Alice finds the doll and becomes friends with it. That night Chucky poisons Father Frank, who feels sick, leaves, and dies in a car crash that takes his head. Officer Stanton heads to the Pierce house because he knows the priest had been visiting.

Home movies with an uninvited guest
The family sits down to old home movies, and Nica spots a strange man in the footage. She looks into Chucky online and finds that he came from an evidence depository, that earlier murders are linked to him, and that he used to be a man named Charles Lee Ray. Ray is the man from the home movie. Meanwhile Chucky electrocutes Jill. Barb goes to find Alice and wakes Ian, who tells her that he hid a camera in the doll and knows about the affair. The scene to brace for comes next, in the middle of the movie: Barb finds Chucky in the attic and sees that he has been covering stitches and wounds on his face with plastic. The doll animates, drives a blade into her eye, and then goes after Nica.
A family friend with a grudge
Nica wakes Ian, who tries to get her out of the house. She grabs an axe to defend herself, and Ian decides this proves she is the killer. Nica has a heart attack and faints, then wakes up taped up by Ian. Chucky kills Ian with the axe, Nica frees herself, and Chucky tosses her from the balcony over the main hall. She asks him why he killed her family. He explains that back when he was a man, he was close to the family and had fallen for Sarah. In 1988 he killed Nica's father and took Sarah captive, until the police tracked him down. He believed Sarah had led them to him, so he stabbed her in the stomach, which is why Nica is paraplegic. He ran, and that led to his death.
The doll goes back in the mail
In the struggle that follows, Nica gains the advantage and stabs Chucky, but he is back on his feet as Officer Stanton arrives. Nica is taken into custody, convicted of the murders, and committed to an institution. Stanton sets off to deliver Chucky to a buyer nobody has identified, and Tiffany Valentine murders him on the way. She then mails Chucky to Alice, the young girl Chucky has been bonding with. After smothering Alice's grandmother, Chucky starts a voodoo chant to move his soul into Alice's body.
The ending, explained

She mails the doll to Alice, the young girl Chucky has been bonding with. Chucky smothers Alice's grandmother and begins a voodoo chant to move his soul into Alice's body.
